Do you have to be emotionally 'strong' to become a counsellor?!

Question: Do you have to be emotionally 'strong' to become a counsellor!?
I was curious to know does a candidate wishing to become a counsellor have to be and have been very 'strong willed' emotionally!?

Through my own personal struggles in lots of areas, counselling and therapy is something I'm passionate about and would like to move into!. However, does having this background put you at a disadvantage when applying for courses!?Www@Answer-Health@Com

Answers:
not if you feel you have overcome these problems!. it will only be a dissadvantage to you if its still an issue, if not then you use these to your advantage to put yourself in others situations and better understand their thought and feelings!. however, if you feel that you are somebody that creates himself problems and finds life dfficult on a reagular basis, then i dont know that you will receive much gratification in listening to others problems!.

i would like to think that my counceller was a strong person (it woulndt matter if they were born this way or becoma it due to circumstamstances, just that they got there) that could deal with their own own issue in order to deal with mine!. if you are over sensitive then it may not be a good idea!. you need to be able to shut off when work is over, otherwise you carry a very large burden!.!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

I think many that are counsellors are inadequate and are helping themselves more than their clients!. On the other hand I have always had unreasonable expectations of myself which has stopped me from undertaking the training!.

I expect of myself to be better sorted out than I am currently, but not perfectly and some gain will probably be made through the training!.

I tried my local college for a basic course and although the woman was ok, I really didn't think her tuition was up to much!. Fortunately I live in London and there are a couple of top colleges for psychotherapists here!. Although I need to work more on myself first!.

I think if you went to your local college to do the first NVQ in counselling skills you would be surpised at the candidates!. Why not do it for a learning exercise!.

Good luck!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

You need to be in an emotional "place" where you can understand and empathise with your clients' pain, but keep it separate from your own issues and not get enmeshed or overinvolved!. If you train as a therapist in an attempt to find answers to your own questions, you will not be able to help others!.

Most therapists will have been through therapy themselves!. For psychoanalysts, it is a requirement that they undergo their own analysis as part of their training!. Also, registered therapists in the UK are required to have regular supervision from another therapist!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

no!. counselors are human too!. the things that you experience and go through many counselors and therapist have to!. in order to be a counselor, in my opinion, you have to be open to other's situations and issues!. since you have experienced certain obstacles in your life you are going to be more sympathetic and helpful to those cases!. if that is your passion go for it!. you could be really beneficial to the mental health community!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

You need to be objective and most emotionally weak individuals can't shut the feelings out or they relate to the person they are counseling to much!. So they seem to come across as weak or as if they are just trying to appease the one being counseled!. so think long and hard on this and ask your self are you emotionally stable enough and can you tune out your feelings to be objective!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

I think yes and no!.

I have always wanted to do counselling and I have my own mental health problems but I think I'm better at helping people rather than myself!.

I think life experience is more important!. I'm sick of going to see counsellor's etc that don't know what I'm going through!.

I think go for it!! You're going to have the EMPATHY that people deserve when you're counselling then!. xoWww@Answer-Health@Com

its not a disadvanteg at all you probably will be able to relate to what patients are saying and so they will be able to open up more with you and as the person said earlier empathy is one thing you will be able to master!.!!Www@Answer-Health@Com
