Electroshock therapy?!

Question: Electroshock therapy!?
Does anyone know anyone who has had this!? Has it been at all useful!? What are the side effects!?Www@Answer-Health@Com

Answers:
I have seen patients undergo ECT with success!. They were so hopelessly depressed!. One women was very elderly and after undergoing ECT she really was so much better!. ECT is done over several sessions!. The side effects other than improved mood, and a decrease in meds were grogginess, sometimes headache!. I have witnessed ECT!. The person is not restrained either by mechanical restraints or physically held down, there is no seizures, convulsions, foaming at the mouth, no tongue depresser held in the mouth so the patient doesn't swallow the tongue!. They are conscious, lay there peacefully and talk throughout it!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

Electroshock therapy was discovered in 1938 by Italian neurologist Ugo Cerletti!. Cerletti observed that pigs about to be slaughtered were electrocuted into unconsciousness in order to make the process easier!. Cerletti concluded that this procedure could be applied to patients who suffered from mental illness!.

Only a year after Cerletti made this discovery, electroshock therapy was introduced into the United States!. During the next three decades, hundreds of thousands of patients were treated with electroshock therapy!. The treatment was widely used for a variety of conditions, including depression, schizophrenia and even homosexuality!.

By the 1960s, electroshock therapy had begun to find its credibility as a treatment seriously questioned!. Psychotropic medications had become widely used as a treatment for mental illness!. Antidepressants were seen as a more humane form of treatment than pumping electricity through the brain!.

However, over the past 20 years, electroshock therapy has once again gained popularity as a treatment!. The promising results of electroshock therapy when antidepressants have failed have prompted new interest in the treatment!. According to research undertaken by the American Psychiatric Association (APA), electroshock therapy has around a 30% higher rate of success in treating depression than medications!.

Statistics from the APA have shown that a patient suffering from severe depression can be brought back to normal health in as little as three weeks with the use of electroshock therapy!. An APA report from 1990 claims that electroshock therapy is the safest and most effective treatment for severe depression!. In 1998, 100,000 shock treatments were performed in America!.

Electroshock therapy has come a long way from the procedures used in the early days!. However, the image of Jack Nicholson's character in the film One Flew over the Cuckoo's Nest is still prevalent in many people's minds!. Peter Bregen, a psychiatrist and author, is a very vocal opponent of ECT!. He claims that undergoing ECT is similar to playing Russian roulette with the brain!. Proven side effects of ECT include memory loss, headaches, muscle pain and nausea!.

The choice to use electroshock therapy lies with the individual!. ECT can only be performed with the consent of the patient!. It cannot be forced upon someone as a treatment, and written consent must be given by the patient or a court-appointed guardian!.

Are you ready for this!? Electroshock therapy is commonly used to treat severe depression when antidepressant medications have been of no use!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

This is just one case that i can tell you about, and is not the same for everyone!.!.!.!.!.!.
A guy i knew in his 30's was put in hospital for depression!. He had been suffering on off for 10 years, been given various medications!. He was then given Fluoxetine, following which he began (for the first time ever) to have suicidal behaviour!. The doctors decided to "try" ECT to help him!.
Following which, he lost all speech and was paralysed in one side of his body!. He no longer recognised his own family!.
His family were obviously destraught, as their son who had gone into hospital for mild depression, was no longer able to care for himself or recognise them!. He sat in the corner of the room in a vegetative state!.
He had to be cared for full time in a nursing home, surrounded by people 3 times his age!.
Later, his family discovered that Fluoxetine had been responsible for causing the Suicidal behaviour (Which had never been present before in his life) thus leading to the ECT treatment!. To this day his family are still campaining through the courts to sue the pharmaceutical company who produced Fluoxetine, and the Doctors who got it so very wrong!.
It has since come out that a staggering amount of people also suffered the side effect of suicidal behaviour as a direct result of Fluoxetine!.
This is not true in all people, some people take the drug with no problems!.
However, for this man's family, these statistics are no concellation, the suicidal behaviour led to the ECT which effectively ended his life!.
Again, ECT can be effective in some people, but statistics show that there are others for whom ECT has been a life sentance of death whilst living!.
He will remain in hospital for the rest of his life, trapped in his own body!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

its probably not going to hurt anyone, but it hasnt been proven to have that great of results!. check out lobotomies, thats some interesting **** for your mind to wrap around!. many in my familys previous generations had electroshock, it was mainly the fact that they "needed" that made them interesting, not any wierd side effects!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

I have heard that it can help!. However, I have had someone very close to me have this done about 10 years ago!. She still can not remember a lot of things from her past and it really frustrates her (ie things that her children did when younger is an example!.!.!. things she WANTS to remember)!. I would never recommend this treatment to anyone unless it was the only choice!.Www@Answer-Health@Com
