Should you visit someone while they are in rehab for alcohol?!

Question: Should you visit someone while they are in rehab for alcohol!?
My best friends mother is in the hospital!.!.!.!.!. because well she has been drinking for the past 20 years and is in very bad shape that rehab cannot take her yet, or atleast until she gets cleared!. Well my friends father and younger sisters, 13 and 18 have been yelling at her to go see her mother, but she is worried that everyone going to see her will make her want to come home, because she has been in rehab 3 times previous and never ends up staying!. what is the best idea, going to visit or not until they are clean!?Www@Answer-Health@Com

So the mom is in the hospital waiting to detox to get cleared for rehab!? I know it is really hard when someone you love is in that situation- but I also know what it is like to be there myself!. In most treatment centers that also have detox units- the patients in detox can not have visitors- this is because (like you said) they are not clean and clear minded yet!. I spent 16 days in a detox facility before being transferred to the rehab unit- then I was able to have visitors!. It is still hard to sit there with family and friends and not want to leave, but I can't imagine if they'd been able to come and see me when I was still detoxing!. It's going to have to be your friend's decision- but my experience leads me to suggest that the friend waits until she makes it to rehab before visiting!. Maybe call her or something, but leave the in person visitation until she is a little further along!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

I would say that it would be best for her to not have any visitors until she is clean!. She needs to be away from the surroundings she is used to for a while!. Yes, seeing the family might actually make it harder for her to be in rehab!. She might end up checking herself out!. Maybe instead - send cards to her with words of encouragement in them!. :)Www@Answer-Health@Com
