Anyone heard of a child having OCD?!

Question: Anyone heard of a child having OCD!?
I'm wondering if my 5-year-old daughter has symptoms!. She's terrified of nearly everything !.!.!. clowns, dogs (pretty much all animals), bugs, boats, water, but she also won't flush the toilet because she's afraid it will overflow!. And recently, she's been throwing actual fits (heart pounding, screaming and running around) when I run her bath because she's afraid the tub will fill too full and flood the house!.

(Her father and I separated about a year and a half ago when he walked out on us when I was pregnant!.)

She's always been a "quirky" kid, afraid of the normal kid stuff, but her pediatrician said she'd grow out of it!. Instead, it seems to be getting worse!. And these are real, true fears!. I've held her close to me and felt her heart pounding and her little body trembling!.
I heard someone say that their son displays similar actions, and they finally took him to a behavioral doctor where he was diagnosed with OCD and anxiety!.

Can anyone give me a little clarity!? Thanks!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

Hi there,

It must be so terrifying to watch your daughter being like this!. My sister had a nervous breakdown when she was four and developed OCD!. It came about as my grandfather passed away before her eyes and her best friend from nursery died!. It hit her really hard!. It was awful seeing her like she was!. She had to do the same thing everyday, where the same clothes, watch the same video, or TV programme, have the same meals at the same time everyday!. She had to sleep in the same position every night and have her head on the exact same place!.

It was so upsetting, she would hold her hair with both hands and she never let go for weeks!. She had to be taken care of 24 hours a day!. She cried all the time and she one day said to my mum!. 'I don't want to be alive anymore!.' That broke my heart, hearing my four year old sister say that!.

But she did get help!. She saw a therapist called Anna and she was amazing, she did art therapy with my sister!. They would have a talk, and then my sister would draw a picture and they would talk about that!. It took a while and my sister began to do things again!. She had to be with my mum all the time and they had to sleep in the same bedroom, but she started going to a group called 'Education Otherwise' and they always got together so the parents could talk and have a break and the children could interact and do things!.

My sister then began having ice skating lessions and performed in competitions, she did trampoling and won awards for it!. She began to lead a relitively normal life!. Then she got into singing and she's very good, though I'm very biased as she is my baby sister!. She began going to karaoke every week!.

And now she is 18 and has been in college for 3 years and training to be a music educater!. She stays at her boyfriends house most weekends, when before she would never have stayed away from home, but she is out there living and happy a good time!.

Anyway, sorry about going on there, but I'm just saying that if your daughter does have OCD, there will be a light at the end of the tunnel!. I would definitely recommend art therapy, as it helped my sister so much!. Go and see your GP and see what they recommend and they can refer you to a therapist!. Good luck and hope your daughter gets better!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

technicaly children can't be diagnosed with OCD until at least 10 its like how kids can't be diagnosed with scitsofrenia until there in there teens!. she may have anxiety and she may grow out of these fears perhaps if you show her that there isn't anything to be scared of or even if the toilet were to overflow that it would be okay because you can clean it up!. no use crying over spilt milk but you should probably clarify it with a doctorWww@Answer-Health@Com

Yes I have heard of that disorder, although what you described doesn't sound like what I've heard!. OCD is a disorder usually for autistic people who continuously move things around from place to place and everything in a room must be according to what their arrangments are!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

I do not think that he may have OCD cause that has to do more with worring about things to much like washing the hands or cleaning!. Not about being afraid of things!. But you should go and get her checked with a real doctor!. or you can try this for information!.

don't force her to do anything and don't feed into it either, a complex could start!. i would consult someone on how you can change to help her without bringing her into the process as much!.
what else is going int he stability of her home!?
was the fear of water borne out of anything she may have seen!?
she's way too young for medication, stop trying to find a label for her!.

best wishes!.

maybe she's ready for showers!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

My three year old nephew is really anal about being clean!. He washes his hands about ten times a day (even when they aren't dirty) if he spills juice on his shirt he has to change it because it has "germs" on it!. I'd take her to a specialist and see what they say!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

My brother is obsessive about being clean, he always smells his fingers, he cant hear the word sick, vomit, puke etc, he has jerky movements with his head, claps his hands, doent eat his food and hes only 9Www@Answer-Health@Com

Yes, many many children have OCD!. And the fact that she is afraid of these simple things suggests that she may be a candidate for either that, or something else!.

Be persistent when it comes to doctors!. They will tell you anything to get you off their back!.

It also might help to document what is going on!. Use a camera, and take it to the doctor!.

Also, OCD comes in MANY different forms!. Just because one person has to have every thing organized, and the other has to have everything clean - doesn't mean your daughter must be this way to be OCD!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

I dont think this is OCD, I'm no pro, but having four grown up kids, think I would say to you, how are you with her and around her!? Do you tend to overcompensate because you split with her Dad!? Or maybe you overprotect her ( understandably) as she is such an importeant part of your life!.!.She may be getting negative vibes from you!.
Try letting her get involved with the things she is afraid of e!.g get her to help run the bath!. I'm sure she will grow out of this I feel it's just a phase!. Which needs patience and playing down a bit, for her sake, and of course your sanity!Www@Answer-Health@Com

I'm sure it's happened time and again!.!. It's something that should be dealt with though!.!. do not ignore it!.!. It can really interfere with normal quality of life!.!. find out the reason for this!.!. could be genetic, or something else!. but do not medicate!. please!.!. not a 5 year old!.

**being afraid is okay however!.!. many children fear things like bugs and big scary animals!.!. some kids even are afraid of costumed characters!. the fear about the bath is indicative of something deeper!.

children who have been molested or harmed in some way, act out in crazy manners!.!. make sure she is in safe hands all the time!. don't trust someone just because they seem "nice" to you!. always do follow up checks!. it's not a dog or cat, it's your human daughter!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

First off - behavioral doctors - i!.e!. psychiatrists, love to diagnose kids with a disorder so they can have return visits every 30 days by putting the kid on an Rx!. Figure out how the Dr!. gets paid!.!.!.!.!.!.!.!.trust me on this!.!.!.!.!.!.!.!!! They put kids on Ritalin, which is a controlled drug meaning you have to go back every 30 days for a new Rx which = office visit!.

That may be the solution for your issues, but I would highly recommend you try all non-medication remedies!. An Rx should be the last resort!.

They treat the kids with what amounts to high dosages of caffeine/speed (not what the med is, but that is effect)!.

I'd see if you can find a therapist (psychologist) who can't prescribe an Rx, but will work the underlying issues!. Divorced parents have a way of unknowingly screwing up kids!. Based on your comments about your ex I'd suspect that your daughter is picking up on your anxiety and manifests it in a different way!.

But I do know of kids that were OCD!. Good luck with her when she is a teen!. Watch her diet/weight closely - starting in about the 6th grade!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

it doesn't sound like ocd!. it sounds like she is truly truly afraid!. maybe she saw something on tv that scared her or another child told her something!. when she has these fears you should calmly ask what it is she is afraid will happen!. then explain to her that it is okay!. that the bathtub won't flood the house, that you are right there with her!. don't force her to do anything and take it slow!. talk to her doctor and maybe he can recommend a specialist that deals with anxiety!. hang in there and god bless!. don't jump to conclusions and diagnose her without a professional's opinion!.Www@Answer-Health@Com
