Paracetamol overdose?!

Question: Paracetamol overdose!?
my 18 year old sister has tried to kill herself a number of times in the last 12 months and yesterday morning she took her third overdose!. the last few times she was very sick, spent a day under observation and was sent home!. yesterday she took 3 overdoses within a few hours of each other and was admitted to hospital!. she was put on a 16 hour drip to counteract any liver damage!. (they started the drip within 4 hours of the last overdose) does anyone know the likelyhood of long term damage!? it was a combination of paracetamol, cocodamol and tramadol tablets she took!.
also - why wont they section her!? they said initially that the first overdose was just a cry for help and gave her counselling but this many overdoses along with the car crashes just seems more than that!
And to top it all off, i feel terrible that all a can manage is to feel angry with her for putting our mum and our sisters through this!!Www@Answer-Health@Com

Answers:
they should keep her in hospital!. Why send her home!? I hope she gets the help she needs and soon!. Can you phone a different doctor for her!?

My friend died from paracetamol overdose 2 years ago!. She wasn't trying to kill herself (although she was depressed and had a drink problem) she just had real bad tooth ache and was terrified of dentists!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

Her dodctor needs to refer her to a Psychiatrist specialising in Drugs/Alcohol!.

One of the major dangers of Paracetamol overdose is that even catching her in time won't always save her, she is in iminent danger of dying through liver failure!.

Many people have died because of the ignorance of this fact!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

How awful for you all, i really feel for you!. Im sure its only her doctor that can get her sectioned (i may be wrong) you could try and have a word with him/her say how worried you are, and that she will probably do it again, i know they wont discuss her personal records with you, but it wouldnt hurt to talk to them!. I know a cousin of mine tried to commit suicide 4 times and he was sectioned!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

i tried to do the same thing (taking tablets) then 2 years later kidney failure, i didnt think it could happen to me but it did!.Ive had 2 kidney transplants which rejected, and now ive been on dyalysis for 6 years!.Tell your friend, that if she keeps doing this she will just keep damaging herself and end up will a really slow horrible painfull death, and she will regret whats shes done and how shes hurt her family!.Best of luck sweetheart!.xWww@Answer-Health@Com

first thing, why havnt you taken all the medicines in the house and locked them away or hidden them!? it takes 3 times for you and you still have them all lying around!?!?

second, why dosnt you mum just ask her why she is trying to kill herself!? and take it from there!?

well this time i wouldnt let her have any money, get someone else to take care of her money untill she can be trusted!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

They wont section her unless doctors feel she is a serious threat to herself or others!.
GP can arrange for any pills to be dispensed daily by chemist, do not keep tablets in the house!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

she needs to stay in the hospital
or she is going to dieWww@Answer-Health@Com

Firstly, only the doctors in charge of her care at the hospital will be able to say whether there will be any long-term liver damage!. I think at this stage it's too early to say, it does sound like quite a serious overdose though!. Sadly, you often have to do something pretty drastic to get sectioned, such is the strain on resources!. I certainly feel that she needs some time as an inpatient!. Whether she's to be sectioned or not will depend on how the hospital and the nearest psychiatric unit liaise with each other!. All I can suggest is that you pressure the staff there to get her some urgent help!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

It is so complicated when a mental disturbance occurs!. I suspect your sister herself might not know what she really wants, except that to end it all then there will be no more troubles for her!. You can not help unless you can put yourself into her position which could be impossible because you are just not her!. All those medicine overdose will damage her internal organs if she persevere!. I don't know if you are older or younger than your sister, but for an 18 years old many things might seem insurmountable, all this might be linked or made worse by the car crush!. Is there someone / a friend might be also involved that can help the family understand her!? I might not have help but I do know how you feel because I hated my brother once and wished he was dead for causing grief for my parents!.Www@Answer-Health@Com
