I recommend contacting a local mental health or substance abuse crisis service for an evaluation of the specific situation in your location!.

The laws vary in each state!. My experience has been that people don't get committed for substance only problems unless they are in legal trouble!.

The basic principle in most states is that in order to be forced into treatment the person has to be an immediate danger to themselves or others!. The standard is pretty high!. The person has to be making a credible threat or have actually tried to hurt themselves or someone else!. Lack of self care is an option, but it has to be severe!. For example, walking around outside in sub freezing weather with summer clothes on or having an apartment cluttered with combustible trash and being careless with smoking!. Being out of control on drugs alone usually doesn't meet the standard!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

Depending on what state you are in!.!.!.!. In NC you can get them committed for an evaluation which is usually about 48 hrs!. After that she has to want help to stay!. Unless she is suicidal or homicidal then she can be involuntarily committed!. But even that is for a short period!. But I just want to let you know from experience that unless she wants help!.!.!. or sees that there is a problem then it wont help her anyway!.!. God Bless your Family!Www@Answer-Health@Com

She can be PC'd (protected custody) for a certain amount of time, but she would have to commit (section 12) herself!. The only way to commit another adult is to go through the time consuming process of proving their incompetance and that they are a danger to themselves and the community through the court of law!.Www@Answer-Health@Com
