What happens if you take a higher than recommended dose of an antidepressant?!

Question: What happens if you take a higher than recommended dose of an antidepressant!?
i am currently on 200-mg of Sertraline which has increased over a year, i feel a lot better after a life of depression, however i feel the drug is weakening a little, what are the dangers of taking a higher than recommended dose!? Is it a physical danger!? etc!. Im not thinking of getting illegal prescriptions either this is just for info, thanksWww@Answer-Health@Com

Answers:
The main danger is physical dependency!. The drug is wearing off because your brain is removing serotonin receptors in response to the overloading caused by Sertraline!. This isn't permanent but can take months to get back to normal!.

The second biggest danger is serotonin syndrome!. This would show up pretty quickly!.

In the longer term there's also tardive dyskinesia, a form of brain damage - and consequently I would strongly recommend coming off SSRIs & SNRIs sooner rather than later and definitely within 4 years!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

Assuming that you are talking about coordinating w/your doctor because otherwise is foolish, not to mention that you'll run out of meds!.!.!.

Risk of side effects may go up to a statistically significant degree while the probability of additional antidepressant efficacy is low!. Depending how high you pushed the dose and how your body processes it, risk at some point includes serotonin syndrome!. There are many reasons to do an "over the limit" dose or combo dosing only w/a doc!.

I don't know if that's specific to Sertraline, but I know that's how the max recommended dose is determined for many psych meds!. Sometimes it's a fuzzy line so some docs will push beyond the max recommended!. Other docs just won't!. Other times, the line isn't very fuzzy, so only very few docs would consider!. Generally, at max, a doc will go to either a switch in med or an add on because that usually proves more effective!. (I'm not an expert! This just is what I've picked up in my own research over the years!.)Www@Answer-Health@Com

you may find by taking more that you feel better but if they are in the benzodiazapine family then thier is a chance you could overdose!. also you would run out of your medication and need more which would mean going back to your doctor's which i think you should do tell him you feel they are not working like they used to and can he up the dose for you!.goodluckxxWww@Answer-Health@Com

I'm sorry to say, but please don't just up the dosage of your medication!.!.if you don't think they are working any longer you need to discuss this with your GP, or Psychiatrist!. Uping the dose could cause physical problems and it just isn't worth it!Www@Answer-Health@Com

it might work better than the lower dosage
technically you are not supposed to adjust your own medication, but I do itWww@Answer-Health@Com

don't do it on your own speak to your doctorWww@Answer-Health@Com

TALK TO YOUR DOCTOR NOW!!!Www@Answer-Health@Com
