Most of the reason girls are not 'favored' in foreign societies is because the society they are in is geared toward male inheritance of property and rights!. That is why it is so easy for women to be 'duped' into believing they aren't worth as much!. Gender equality is not universal and there are very few societies where the female has more power through birth than the male--Amazonians!.
Genital mutilation is regarded largely as tradition or a way to control women in a harem type situation!. It is meant to keep the women from straying in a marriage--however the men can stray as much as they want generally!.
As for women in America it has been the 'ideal' to be ideal in America for as long as people have put fashion in print!. It's gotten worse as the decades go by but back in the late 1800s during the Victorian period women went to extreme extremes to get the proper figure to fit into the fashion of the day!. Corsets would be worn from birth to form the body into the 'waspish' figure where the waist was a mere 15-20 inches around and the bust and hips would then blossom out!. The problem with that is that the actual physical nature of a female form makes that nearly impossible due to the ribcage and internal organs!. Women would die on the operating table having ribs removed without anesthesia!. They would swallow tapeworms to keep their weight down so they could eat and not gain anything!. It's a wonder to me there are any people on the planet considering how screwed up it's always been!.
Even in the Bible women have very few rights or privileges!. They are not equal in the eyes of the Lord nor the laws of the time!. Since the advent of Christianity women have had two positions in society: the whore/wife or the virgin!. A woman is considered bad if she's had sex--doesn't matter if she's married or not, but a man is actually encouraged to have experience before he's married!. Just WHERE is he getting the experience!? A woman surely or else you'll end up with homosexual relations which is definitly not kosher!.
