Anti-depressants - For better or for worse?!

Question: Anti-depressants - For better or for worse!?
I'm going through a rough patch at the mo with a lot of stress and anxiety!. I've just finished my 2nd year at university, i've worked part-time since i was 17 and just switched jobs due to hating my previous job!. I'm not finding the new one any better because of the hours and management are rude (as they always seem to be)!. But i've always thought of having of myself having a a rather stressful life, but i've never wanted to go on anti-depressants because i've heard that they can be bad for you in the long run!? It's not just uni and work, my family at home are always arguing, money problems and i was followed about 2 years ago by a man who only touched my bum n tried to grab somewhere else but it shook me!. I'm over that but for some reason i feel like i'm not really enjoying myself, and it's the holidays!. Are they o!.k!? or are they o!.k for a short length of time!?Www@Answer-Health@Com

I don't personally think anti depressants will benefit you, as the problems you have mentioned are subject to change, university will end, a job can be changed and arguing with family members and money problems are something we all go though!.

I have social anxiety, and mild depression, I have recently come off of anti depressants as they were not helping with the causes of the problem, although since coming off of them I have realised they did help my state of mind and whilst on them I was less prone to sinking very low!.

I think for you, perhaps councilling would help!. I have been seeing a councillor for a while now, and it helps, having an outlet where you can express what is bothering you, without feeling judged!.

If you have a good councillor, and one that does their job properly!. you will find ways of working through the issues that are holding you back, and you will be able to make adjustments to your life, that will benefit you!.

Hang on in there, your not alone, and I am sure with a little bit of support you will be able to move forward!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

You need to see a Dr and discuss this with him!. Anti-depressants can be very helpful if needed, though they are not a 'magic wand' and are safe used properly as prescribed!. Depends what you call short term!? They take about 4 weeks to give a full effect and the length of time needed really depends on how you are and your underlying problems!. Probably 3 mths is the shortest but you and your Dr are the ones to judge that at the time!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

your problems are normal, no need for anti depressants!. they will only work on a long term basis and are for people with mental health problems or a imbalance of chemicals in the brain that causes them to feel sad or depressed!. they will make you feel 10 times worse for about a month and then normal untill you come off them!. first month you will feel terrible, and suicidal, when coming off of them you will feel the same for a while!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

!.I have had anxiety disorder all my life!.I have tried medication on a few occasions and it doesn't work for me!.But everyone is different and you won't know until you try them!.Good luckWww@Answer-Health@Com

If you are diagnosed with an anxiety disorder, antidepressants will help tremendously!. They are long term treatment!. They are not harmful!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

They will help as long as you take them but I wouldn't recommend them I took them for several years but when I stopped taking them I had to face up to the problems then!. It is better to work out your problems without the pills!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

People I talked to about it tell me that the drugs made them forgetful and less focused, and they stopped using as soon as they could so things would be "less cloudy!." If you go to a doctor, and they arent a total mutant, they should tell you to try several things before medication, such as reading self-help literature, joining a new group with similar interests (such as campus clubs or a church group) or even taking a vacation and of course, you should leave your job if it is really bringing you down!. College is a great time to move, see how the rest of the country lives! Best of luckWww@Answer-Health@Com

Anti depressants were a saviour for me!. I had serious Panic disorder and Anxiety and without them i think i would have killed myself!. They really did help and i know it, i say if you feel that bad then give them a shot, and if you do feel as bad as i did i am sure you will!. I was on them for around 4 years i kept coming off them but going back on them as i wasn't right yet but now i have been off them nearly a year with no returning symptoms!. They just re train your chemical systems in your brain to produce the way they should!. I was ok on them and still seem ok!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

yes, yes, yes, they would be ok to take and i bet you would feel alot better!! so get down ur doctor's and tell him how depressed you are and ask him is thier some medication they can give you to help make you feel better and if the 1st one does not seem to work keep going back and getting them changed till u find the one that help's you!.and not all anti depressants are addictive such as prozac thier not addictive where as valium is!.hope this has helped and good luckxxWww@Answer-Health@Com

I have been diagnosied with an anxiety disorder and have been put on medication for this, I started on a really low dose and have it increased if needed I have had it increaed once!.

They do help with an anxiety disorder and my GP thinks I will only need to be on them for approx 6-12 months then decrease my dosage to come of them!. I have found they have helped, I have been able to think a little clearer, and make sense of things!.

I don't feel like failure being on them its just that I need a little help to get me through the patch I am going through!. I would definatley talk to your GP they may suggest counselling mey help and they can keep an eye on you and decide if this is the best treatment option is!.

I would suggest getting help sooner to deal with things even if it means medication rather than waiting until it all becomes to much, I didnt have medication to begin with but saw my GP regularly discussing how I was feeling and the effects it was having, it was only when she and I both agreed that this may help and worth a try that I made the decision to go on anxiety medication (which is an anti depressant but works well with anxiety)!.

Hope this helps!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

Antidepressants are only useful with talking therapy too!. And even then, I personally think that talking therapy, a healthy diet (no refined sugar, lots of fruit and veggies), daily cardio excercise, no hormonal pills in the body (they affect moods), and no caffeine is the way to go!. I was put on antidepressants at 16 and spent the next ten years being numb to most things, not dealing with my problems, drinking far too much alcohol to feel alive, being inorgasmic, and generally feeling good - but not really caring much about anything!. Now I do all of the above things I've mentioned, except the talk therapy!. I wish I could do the talk therapy, but I can't afford to right now!. Talk to your doctor, refuse antidepressants, and demand talking therapy!. Good luck!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

Although anti-depressants have a place i really do think you should avoid starting to take them unless absolutely neccesary!.i!.e!. if you felt like self harming etc!. They will not solve your problems but numb you to them!.
I would try to make some time for yourself , a bit of relaxation and pampering will do no harm!.
If possible try to find another job more suited to your needs with a kinder management!.You talk about stress - money worries and family arguments these are all complex problems but how you deal with them may be what can be altered!. Try to talk to a friend face to face , remember that in time your money worries will subside and hopefully your family will resolve there differences!.Try to keep of anti depressants as they are addictive and can cause other problems!.Www@Answer-Health@Com
