This is the list of side effects in the BNF (used by pharmacists and doctors):

Dry mouth, sedation, blurred vision, constipation, nausea, cardiovascular side effects (such as ECG changes), sweating, tremor, rashes and some behavioural changes (hyperactivity, increased / decreased appetite!.)

These are the more common ones but you don't have to have them all! If you've only just started then these symptoms will be more pronounced!. After a month, if it's still really bothering you, talk to your GP!. Or you could nip into your local pharmacy and ask the pharmacist to explain further!. They know more about the medications than the doctors!

I take a few medications that make my mouth dry!. I tried sucking mints to help stimulate my saliva glands but be careful of the sugar free as the Xylotol in them (or whatever sugar substitute they use) will give you diarrhoea!. I've found I can chew gum to the same effect!. I had to give the polos up as I broke most of my teeth because I had to chew!

Hope this helps!

I've been taking Amitriptyline for 10 years!. The last five it's been 100mg at bedtime!. So that I am not groggy in the morning, I have started taking it a couple of hours before bedtime!.

I was prescribed this as an antidepressant, but it works better for my sleep than any sleep aid I ever tried!.

I did have the side effects you mentioned in the very beginning, but they were gone within about a month!. BTW, I started out at 10mg!. - that did not help me even in the beginning!. 25mg!. was the first doseage that actually helped, and later it was 50mg!., the 100mg I take now turned out to be just what I needed, it's been years, and I have never felt like I needed more!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

yes, that is a very normal side effect in the triptyline family of drugs!. I'm on a similar medicine nortriptyline however I'm on 80mg a day!. I usually feel pretty hazy the next day but you will get used to it and adjust your mind to accepting it becoming yourself again in no time =) check out http://www!.drugs!.com/cdi/amitriptyline!.h!.!.!.
it'll tell you the side effects, if you get anymore you won't be worried and know it's normal =) hope this helps!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

It is not a sleep medicine but an antidepressant, AND an old drug, there are much better ones now, that do not have the dangers of this one and no addiction!. see source below!. Ambien is a good one,Www@Answer-Health@Com

i took this dose of this drug for 2 years to combat migraines, i must admit i never had any side effects from it, but everyone is different, there is loads of info in the patient leaflet that is in the box with the medication, what does that say!?!? there is loads of newer updated meds available now so ask for something else if this doesnt suit you ;-)Www@Answer-Health@Com

This is a very common side effect!. Amytriptyline can damage your teeth from your mouth being so dry!. Both of those are very common side effects!. I think 10 mg is the lowest dose!. there are many sleep aids that do not damage your teeth!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

Yes it is!. If you are not happy with this prescription and the side effects, you can go back to your doctor and tell him about the unwanted side effects, and ask him for a substitute!.Www@Answer-Health@Com
