The job of a Psychiatrist is to prescribe medicine!. I feel as though it is the job of the therapist to determine if you are someone who is depressed to the point of needing medication!.

I've been in therapy and on anti-depressants since I was 16 (I'm now 22)!. I've been through multiple Psychiatrists, but have had the same therapist!. From personal experience I've found that the main job of a psychiatrist it to provide you with medicine for an illness (just like any other MD)!. However, I would never seek out the advice of a psychiatrist to tell me if I'm depressed or not - for that I would talk regularly to a therapist!. For one thing, you could be having a bad month - say you lost your job - and a psychiatrist is going to want to put you on medicine if they deem you "depressed" - when you might really just be in a funk!. Psychiatrist usually schedule appointments in 15, 30, 45 minutes sessions!. How good of a diaognosis can you get from that!?!!?

In your case, if your weary about taking medicine because your not really sure you need it, try going through a couple therapy sessions!. The therapist will be able to give you a better view of whether, in their professional opinion, you need medicine or not because they will have had the time to better understand your situation!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

Listen to Karen W!!! Depression is not the state of mind everyone thinks it is!. It means you lack serotonin!. Anti-depressants help to keep the serotonin levels normal, helping you get better!.

I spent 4 years on anti-depressants and probably wouldn't be here without them!. I am fine now but I used to think I was not the sort of person to use anti-depressants either!.

I would take it!. I take mine, have for years!. Depression is a disease!. It's a chemical imbalance, not unlike diabetes!. If you were diabetic you wouldn't question taking insulin!. That's just how I look at it!. Do some more research on the internet!. All medications have all of those scary sounding side effects!. But they are so rare!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

Hi, i also suffered from depression and had to take anti depressants, they do help in the here and now, but you should also speak to your GP about being referred to a councilling service!. Anti depressants help the symptoms, the councilor the cause!. Good luck!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

Look into an online chat room!. I actually own one and you are more then welcome to check us out!. http://www!.paniccentral!.com Its for anxiety and depression!. Lots of people take meds there and can maybe give you some info that a doc leaves out!. Hope this helped!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

i don't believe in them either
made my daughter worse
talk to a councellor to help with your depression
what about family members
also there are natural treatment that don't make you feel worse - look under alternative mental health on googleWww@Answer-Health@Com

I have taken them in the past and found they can be helpful, however, I do not believe that the possible side-effects are 'so rare!.' All of them have potential side-effects, and you should be aware of what those are before you begin taking anything so that when you begin experiencing them you understand why!. (I found myself bouncing off the walls at 3am and did not understand why!.) Also, do NOT abruptly stop taking an antidepressant (ie: because you don't need them anymore) that you've been taking regularly!. Allow a doctor to 'step your dose down' to remove them from your system safely!.

I think it's much more important that you find a good counselor/therapist!. If you don't have friends around right now, it is that much more important to have someone you trust who can listen to and advise you!. You may find that a listening ear is all you really need!.Www@Answer-Health@Com
