My fifteen year old sister is close to being put on anti-depressants, because nothing else seems to have worked!. What bad effects/side effects could it have!?Www@Answer-Health@Com

Answers:
There is a direct link between antidepressants and violent and suicidal behaviour!.

General side effects:

Dry mouth
Urinary retention
Blurred vision
Constipation
Sedation (can interfere with driving or operating machinery)
Sleep disruption
Weight gain
Headache
Nausea
Gastrointestinal disturbance/diarrhea
Abdominal pain
Inability to achieve an erection
Inability to achieve an orgasm (men and women)
Loss of libido
Agitation
Anxiety

Not all of those are extremely common!.

Also, look into St!. John's Wart, it's an herb that has been shown to be just as effective as antidepressants, without as many side effects!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

For most people who take it, an antidepressant will have no side effects or only very mild ones, or else it wouldn't have been able to pass the clinical trials they put all medications through!

You'll tend to hear more often from people with bad experiences, which give anti-depressants a bad name!. Because those people are angry and want to tell someone about it!. But for a LOT of people who take them, they work very well and don't have any bad side effects!.

The only very common negative side effect (one that most people will get) is difficulty orgasming, which is only a problem for certain types of antidepressant (SSRIs)!. And even though it's annoying, it's completely harmless and goes away if you stop taking the medicine!. Also that might not be a big issue for a 15-year-old! :)

In any case I've tried a couple different antidepressants (Celexa and Wellbutrin), they both worked perfectly!. The only side effect from Celexa was the orgasm thing!. Wellbutrin has not had ANY side effects at all for me!. And it works amazingly well!. I'd recommend that one if anything!. Neither of them made me feel like "a zombie" or have "no emotions" or anything at all!. It just felt like some sort of dark cloud over my head had finally gone away so I could get on with my normal life!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

it can kind of make you feel a bit like a zombie - you can never be really depressed and you can never be really happy!. and if you suddenly stop taking the medication, you can get suicidal really quickly!. but the good outweighs the bad i think!. just make sure that if your sister wants to stop taking the medication, that she consults a doctor first so they can help her wean off the medicine safely!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

it really depends which anti-deps - there are many out there wth ranging side effects!. one tip is to read up on them and also look at how people have come off them too!. i was on effexor and coming off the drug was awful!. prozac worked well for me and is nicer to come off - less withdrawal!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

Tired, no emotions even happy ones!. There are different ones and she needs to work with the doc to find the right dosage!. Prozac is most commen at 10 or 20 mg!. Even at this age she should stop taking it after a couple of years when the hormones balance and the brain chemicals stabilize!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

Anti-depressants can make people want to kill themselves!. It can make things worse!. It can make you anxious and scared!. There are some bad side effects but they do not affect everyone!. Sometimes only certain brands will affect certain people!. Its usually worth the risk!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

I grew a penis whilst on anti-depressents!.

or was that Viagra? !?Www@Answer-Health@Com

it'll make her worse than she is, make sure you don't let them drug herWww@Answer-Health@Com
