What are the treatments for OCD?!

Question: What are the treatments for OCD!?
I'd like to know about either the specific drug treatments or detail into cognitive behaviour therapy!. I know a little about both, but I don't know if the drugs are standard anxiolytics or what CBT for OCD exactly entails!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

Answers:
I'm bipolar with OCD behaviors to go along with it!. So I get medicated for bipolar (Lamictal and Paxil), which is an effective combination for me (after trying several things with my psychiatrist), and has helped me with some of the anxiety that made my OCD so bad!.

Common therapy is exposure therapy, in which you "do" the stuff that gives you OCD anxiety!. There are a couple books, one of which is called Brain Lock, which are geared to self-help, but working with a therapist is highly recommended!.

I still have a lot of symptoms, but they are not as debilitating as they once were, and are in fact pretty minor!. If I had actually done more of the therapy, I would probably be even better off!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

OCD drug treatments :

There are two types of serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SRIs)!. The newer kinds are known as "selective" serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) because their primary effect is on serotonin neurotransmitters!. The SSRIs currently available in Canada are fluoxetine (Prozac), fluvoxamine (Luvox), sertraline (Zoloft), paroxetine (Paxil) and citalopram (Celexa)!. Of these, citalopram (Celexa) is the newest and its effectiveness has not yet been proven through research!. These medications are considered to be equally effective on OCD, although some may work for some people and not for others!.

If people begin to feel better and stop taking their medication too soon, or too quickly, the risk of relapse increases!. The decision to stop taking medication should only be made in consultation with a doctor!. The following guidelines can help to lower the risk of relapse when a person stops using medication:

* Lower the dosage gradually by tapering or reducing the medication over a period of time, possibly several months!.
* Follow-up with a health care professional regularly to help monitor the severity of any symptoms of OCD!.
* Combine cognitive-behavioural therapy with medication and use the skills learned to control any symptoms that may arise when medication is discontinued!.

Anxiolytics will reduce the anxiety that is the function of the obsessions and compulsions to reduce in OCD!. As such, drugs won't address the cause of the OCD!.

CBT for OCD is based on determining the anxiety provoking beliefs that lead to people engaging in obsessions and compulsions (often classified as safety behaviours), and then exposing people to these fears thereby challenging the beliefs usually related to disaster!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

usually OCD is best treated with medication and therapy!. What will work for one might not work for another!. A professional could help you get informed, and do not hestiate to get a second opion!. It also depends on the intensity of the OCD, light or very heavy!.
Seroxat is very often prescibed, but has serious downsides!. It will work but it is very difficult to get off!. serious withdrawl effect and you will gain weight!. There are other drugs that work just as good!.
