Going to ER for panic attacks? good idea or bad idea?!
Question: Going to ER for panic attacks!? good idea or bad idea!?
Answers:
Such attacks can be debilitating and therefore the ER should be considered!. Then you must follow up with your own doctor who should refer you for counseling etc!.Www@Answer-Health@Com
If it's truly a panic attack, the ER is not the appropriate venue for managing it!.
Panic attacks are time limited!. They will eventually pass!.
Going to the ER will set up the sufferer to believe that they MUST visit the ER in order for the attacks to abate!. It then becomes a self fulfilling prophecy!.
Learning to manage panic attacks is done outside the ER via psychotherapy and/or medication!.
The only time that an ER visit would be appropriate for a panic attack would be initially (i!.e!., the FIRST panic attack - to rule out other physiological causes) and any attacks accompanied by suicidal ideation/intent!.
There is nothing of substance that the ER can do other than globally assess you to make sure you're not in any physiological danger (e!.g!., take your vitals) and wait for calm to return!.
