Answers:
It depends a lot on what you are looking for and what the illness is!. First and foremost, as the first responder put, NAMI is an excellent resource!. I would, also, suggest your therapist, psychologist or psychiatrist -- if you have one -- or whoever made the diagnosis!.

Another great resource is the NIMH -- they will send free pamphlets and books to anyone who requests them!. I have several of their booklets on my NAMI resource table at every weekly meeting I facilitate!. Their website publication page is:
http://www!.nimh!.nih!.gov/health/publicati!.!.!.
and you can order online and actually download HTML or PDF files if you want to or have them mailed to you!. So you can read them immediately and see if you want a permanent copy mailed if you don't want to print it!.

With a little more information, I might be able to recommend good book resources, but I don't know a general overall book for all mental illnesses!. There are several that touch on individual topics, such as childhood sexual abuse, depression, PTSD, bipolar, etc that can be purchased at any bookstore!.

A few other general sites that may have some information you can use would be:

Web MD http://www!.webmd!.com
Provides health information, tools for managing your health, and support on many topics

Mayo Clinic http://www!.mayoclinic!.com
Tools to manage your health which is accomplished by providing useful and up-to-date information and tools that reflect the expertise and standard of excellence of Mayo Clinic!.

About!.com http://www!.about!.com
Web site where you'll find practical advice and solutions for almost any problem!. There are links to other sites as well as a search engine to information provided by the website!.

The Samaritans http://www!.metanoia!.org/suicide/samarita!.!.!.
Support to anyone at anytime!. Email jo@samaritans!.org or look up local phone numbers!. Samaritans are available to anyone needing help!.

Wings of Support http://www!.the-bright-side!.org
Provides support, educational materials, articles and personal stories for those experiencing difficulties!.

SAMHSA's National Mental Health Information Center http://mentalhealth!.samhsa!.gov/
Operated by U!.S!. Department of Health and Human Services; it provides information, and links to mental health services!.

Hope some of this helps
