Effexor issues?!

Question: Effexor issues!?
My psychiatrist tried to put me on Effexor, but thankfully I had the foresight to do a little research first!. After finding that it's known for being the "brain zap" drug, and after looking around in forums of people on it and trying to get off of it, why on earth are they prescribing this!? Shouldn't something with its horrible side effects and hellish withdrawal symptoms be an absolute last resort!? I really feel for people who have started this and wish you all luck getting off of it!. What's the deal with all of the ads, too!? It's as though they're pushing the stuff!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

Answers:
I'm currently on Effexor right now, and have been for almost four years!. It's been very effective for me, and I'm lucky that I didn't have serious side effects or brain zaps!. The brain zaps and other horrific withdrawl symptoms occur usually when you completely taper off too quickly or abruptly stop taking it cold turkey without the doctor's supervision!. It's best to consult your doctor to gradually taper off the medication over a period of weeks or even months!. In order to save money, I'm currently tapering down from 225mg back to 150mg and so far I've been lucky!. Last Monday I started to take the first step down to 187 mg intrevals, and by next week I should be back at 150mg!. All I have is slight dizziness (which is also probably from skipping meals cause I'm so busy with work and other things) and is still manageable--no brain zaps or anything else serious *knock on wood* I'll just have to see how I'm feeling in the next two weeks!.Www@Answer-Health@Com
