Are you talking about being put in a mental hospital!? I'm going to assume that is what you are talking about!.

First I went to a local emergency room and they had a doc check me over to make sure I was still alive (that was what I was told anyway) then I was force to take off my close (leaving my bra and undies on) to do a skin assement!.!.so they can document any wounds or what not!. Then I had to wait (or so it's been each time I've gone - 7 times) about 3 - 5 hours before being transported to the mental hospital!.!.!.it isn't attached to the main hospital!.!.!.its on the othe side of town!. When I get there they ask me like a million questions and do another skin assement and then show me to my room!. When my stuff arrives (by husband) the staff goes through it to make sure I don't have anything I cna't have!. They almost denied me my contact solution when I really need!.!.!.I wear contacts most everyday!.!.
As for what I can do depends on what hall I'm put on!.!.!.I've been on a more secure hall because of the voices and I've been put on the high functioning hall because they didn't think the voices were that important!.
Normally I'll wander around the hall, write in my journal, watch tv!.!.!.and if they let us, go outside!.
Most all the nurses and other staff there are pretty nice!. I've met a few who were evil (in a sense) and I hated them!.!.!.but over all most people there are great!. They want you to get better!.
The doctors are in such a hurry that they will walk up to you say hi ask you a question and as you are answering it they are walking to another patient!.!.!.crazy!.
I've had to deal with some nurses telling me that I just have to get over my problems and live life!.!.!.which would be great if I could do that but I can't!.
I am dx with Schizoaffective disorder (schizophrenia with a mood disorder (major depression)!.!.!.Most days I'm paralized by the depression and the voices!.
When I tell them the staff about my voices they try to tell me to remember that it's all in my head!.!.but with that response it's obvious they've never heard voices before!.
Right now my voices have a plan for me to kill myself!. They'll let me talk about the plan but not what the plan is!. I've tried calling crisis and talking to my husband but no one seems to understand or care!.!.!.so I'm probably going to end up following the voices!.

I hope I answered your question!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

I have never been committed, but I have served as counsel for clients (2x) during involuntary commitment hearings!. First there are two types of commitments to behavioral health: voluntary and involuntary!. What "the only (name of poster)"said is absolutely correct with regard to voluntary commitment--it's just like being admitted to a hospital!. With involuntary commitment it is very different!. By law (in my state) before a person can be involuntarily committed they must be given an opportunity (offer) to voluntarily commit themselves!. If they chose not to they are involuntarily committed!. They must be determined imminently homicidal or suicidal, or incapable of maintaining themselves to survive!. Then they are held in a locked unit (they can't leave) for 72 hours!. They are no longer free during that time but are held for treatment (ie!. put on medication--they can NOT refuse, and given therapy)!. After that time they can be released or the doctors can request a longer commitment period (of another 72 hours)!. Essentially, with a voluntary commitment the person is free, with an involuntary the person is detained and held for treatment!. btw, a person may sign in voluntarily and then try to leave and before they leave the paperwork processed for an involuntary commitment if there is cause to prevent their leaving!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

For me being committed was like going into the hospital for my hip surgeries!. The only differences were that the other patients were also there for psychiatric reasons rather than orthopedic reasons!. Instead of seeing a physical or occupational therapist to help me learn how to re walk you have psychiatric therapists and social workers helping you learn how to deal with a mental illness and to stabilize you!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

as number one said but they have checks every 15 min!.you dont sleep all day you go to classes therapy i was in a class from 700am til1000 pm same for drug and alcohol too !.all the horror stories is bs !.they dont lock you up and throw away a key your allowed phone calls visits all depends on your situationWww@Answer-Health@Com
