Has going to counseling helped you?!

Question: Has going to counseling helped you!?
I believe I have an anxiety disorder and I have some issues with my husband that I would like to get sorted out!. Anyhow, I started counseling yesterday!. Yesterday was just the consultation appointment where they took all of my information to assign me to a counselor!. However, the woman that took my information did recommend a book to me and some breathing exercises!. She seemed understanding, but I need something a little more intense than breathing exercises!. Is this all that counselors normally do, or will it improve!?Www@Answer-Health@Com

It will improve, usually!. I hope you're seeking out a good clinical psychologist, and that you won't just settle for whoever works at student health, if you are having serious anxiety problems!. If, e!.g!. you were having panic attacks, I would hope you'd find a good cognitive/behavioral therapist and consider a psychiatrist who could prescribe Klonopin or something similar for a brief time!. Not that there might not be a great counselor at student health, but if you're not satisfied with them, it's worth shopping around until you find one who is helping!.

It's very easy to project one's own experience onto others, especially online where you don't see much about them!. But with that great big caveat, your posts remind me of some important things in my life beyond science!. The following comes from my experience with my own anxiety disorder and the issues that had to be sorted out with my ex-wife!.

Bear in mind that anxiety may be due to issues with your husband!. You may not have a "disorder" but a normal reaction!. You've described behavior by your husband here that comes across to me as emotional abuse!. Personally, I spent about 10 years treating my "anxiety disorder" even after my doctor told me it was understandable to need tranquilizers to deal with my wife!.

But in reality, I wound up tranquilizing my way through an abusive marriage for way too long!. It took another bunch of years before another marriage counselor told me my wife was not going to stop being abusive because she had borderline personality disorder, which in general is for life and in general the people with it won't go to counseling because they don't think they need it!. (There is somewhat effective therapy for those who do try, but they're so rare)!.

Good luck with your anxiety, and take my unsolicited advice with a grain of salt, but remember that anxiety can be like pain - our neurons telling us that something is wrong and needs to be changed!. It's not always a bad thing!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

I think she recommended the book and breathing exercises to give you something to try while you are waiting for your first appointment with your new counselor!.
Counseling has helped me very much!.
Counseling is your time!. You talk about what you want to talk about!. Counselors have many tools they use to help you to be able to focus!. You are in charge of your sessions!. You can tell the counselor what is most helpful for you and what is not so helpful!. Good Luck and take care of yourself!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

It took me awhile to understand what seeing a counsellor could do to help me!. I ended up seeing 3 counsellors until i found one i felt i could open up to!. My counsellor gave me leaflets and information and also breathing exercises as i get panic attacks and anxiety!. i felt that talking things over with my counsellor helped as he did not put any pressure on me, i talked about what i wanted to and he never offered advice as such, just little nudges to help me think and decide myself!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

One session, especially just a consultation, is not enough for you to gauge whether or not it will help!. You should at least give it a try in further sessions!. I have had counseling before and some issues got resolved or at least led me to understand more about my condition!. However, I found that it really depends on the person who is counseling you!. My partner and I went to a few counseling session to try to resolve our differences!. My partner ended up storming out and refused to go back!. The counselor simply told me that if they weren't willing to cooperate then the only thing I could do was to try to resolve without them!. I am no longer with that person!. Hence, no more counseling!. It really depends on you and how much you want to make changes for yourself!. However, I too was told to do the deep breathing exercises and they do help a bit but I find that just nice long walks in nature help me more than anything!. And I never found a book that really helped me!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

Counseling has absolutely helped me a great deal!. I used to scoff at the idea and was adamantly against counseling!.!.!. But my anxiety became so severe that I broke down and gave it a try!. I've seen my psychiatrist for about 7 years now, once a month, every month (with few exceptions)!. He and I don't see eye to eye on everything, but he helps me to think things through more fully!.!.!. He also acts as a "sounding board" for me to vent my feelings without fear!.
He also prescribes myedicine, which has been a huge part of my process!.
My anxiety will disorder will never go away completely!. He helps meanage it and deal with it!.

It does take the right person though!. It also takes a lot of te and die-hard commentment!. I thoroughly disliked my "pdoc" at first!. It took about 3-5 months for me to warm up to him for for both of us to adapt to each other!.
I'd say to you- "give it a go"!. Try a few sessions!. If you're then not getting anything out of it, try another doctor!.

Hope your road to recovery is both smooth and swift!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

I had counselling and found it to be almost completely useless, but a lot of people find it helpful!. It might be that you just need to give it more time, or see a different counsellor, or talk to a psychiatrist if you want someone to "delve deep"Www@Answer-Health@Com

therapy changed my life!. it is just a tool, but all of it adds up!. i believe the answers are inside you already!. the therapist just helps you sort them out!.Www@Answer-Health@Com
