Can pregnancy bring out or worsen a mental illness?!

Question: Can pregnancy bring out or worsen a mental illness!?
A young woman of my acquaintance is midway through her first pregnancy, and is becoming aggressive, verbally abusive to family members, controlling, and almost irrational!. This is not typical pregnancy mood swings or irritation!. Her family is becoming afraid of her!.

Her sibling is bipolar, btw!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

Answers:
Yes exactly!. Mental changes are something to look for during pregnancy, especially depression and psychosis!. She will need a psychiatric consult, and perhaps be hospitalized if the problem is seen to pose a problem to her baby!. Also, in bipolar disorder there is a familial tendency of 50%!. that is the highest of any mental illness!. Still, family is very important in helping her!. good luck!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

The effect of all the hormones can definitely send some pregnant women a bit off the deep end - and of course we all know it happens after the baby is born, also; severe post partum depression can lead to a minority of women harming either their children or themselves, or sometimes both!.

I would suggest that the family of your acquaintance wait until - hopefully - she is in a slightly calmer mood, and then candidly put it to her that something seems slightly awry; they could offer to go with her to see her consultant!. And yes - the fact that there is bipolar disease in the family IS relevant and should be mentioned to her consultant!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

Yes!. A friend of mind was the sweetest person I've ever known!. She had a brain tumor removed several years ago and was told NOT to get pregnant because the tumor had been hormone related!.

She married and after a few years became pregnant (accidentally) and seemed to be fine - but man, her personality changed! She was a different person!.

After the baby was born, it was discovered that the tumor had returned and she passed away!.!.!.!.!.!.!.!.!.!.she was pretty mean until the end, too!. It was so sad for the family!.

I guess that's not an example of mental illness -- but just an example of how something hormone related can change a person's personality!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

She does sound bipolar!. Has she been treated before!? Family should be supporting her and watch for more odd behavior!. Pregnancy and hormones alone can make a great impact on someone's life, some women experience post-partum depression!. Remember Andrea Yates!? I hope she is okay, talk to her husband!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

It could just be her hormones, nothing to worry about; its her first pregnancy or it could be that her hormones are triggering the disease that runs within her family!. She should go directly to her family doctor and talk to him/her!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

i've seen it in some acquaintances of mine!. some had a mental illness before and it actually brought out post-partum depression!. try to convince her family to talk to her and possibly schedule an appointment with a therapist!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

If it's bad enough that "Her family is becoming afraid of her," then I'd definitely recommend that she visit a therapist or a doctor at least!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

Yes!. Some women have severe depression and even psychosis during or after pregnancy!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

yews!.!.when you are pregnant, your body produces diff hormaones!. It is easy for someone who has a chemical imbalance to get worseWww@Answer-Health@Com
