What is Obessive Compulsive Disorder?!

Question: What is Obessive Compulsive Disorder!?
Answers:
First, recognize there is a distinction between OCD and OCPD!. A lot of people refer to themselves as being "OCD" because they have a propensity to be neat, organized and demanding!. That defintion better describes OCPD!. People with that personality disorder are obsessed with order, cleanliness, time and relationship!. Many people like to refer to themselves in this manner as if its a compliment!. The truth is these people also lack the flexibility to distinguish between moral grounds or gray areas!. They are rigid and can often be unpopular and socially inept!.

OCD is different!. First understand the distinction between obsessions and compulsions!. Obsessions are a pervading thought that can't be put aside!. Compulsions are acting upon those obsessive thoughts!. People with OCD have this chronic anxiety and feel the need to perform ritualistic actions even though they don't want to do them or can recognize they are absurd!. Examples would be a person who needs to tie and unite his shoelaces precisely 10 times before he is ready!. They might feel they have to tap the top of the door casing exactly 23 times before they can leave!.

In either case, people who refer to themselves as OCD are not really OCD by any means!. They are just Type A individuals who desire success and emphasize order as a means to achieve that success!. They are not true OCD or OCPD!. If they saw patients who are afflicted with these disorders, they would not be proud to label themselves that!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

Although these signs are often present in OCD, a person who shows signs of infatuation or fixation with a subject/object, or displays traits such as perfectionism, does not necessarily have OCD, a specific and well-defined condition!.

To be diagnosed with OCD, a person must have either obsessions or compulsions alone, or obsessions and compulsions, according to the DSM-IV-TR diagnostic criteria!. The Quick Reference to the diagnostic criteria from DSM-IV-TR (2000) describes these obsessions and compulsions:[1]

Obsessions

Recurrent and persistent thoughts, impulses, or images that are experienced at some time during the disturbance, as intrusive and inappropriate and that cause marked anxiety or distress!.
The thoughts, impulses, or images are not simply excessive worries about real-life problems!.
The person attempts to ignore or suppress such thoughts, impulses, or images, or to neutralize them with some other thought or action!.
The person recognizes that the obsessional thoughts, impulses, or images are a product of his or her own mind, and are not based in reality!.
Compulsions

Repetitive behaviors or mental acts that the person feels driven to perform in response to an obsession, or according to rules that must be applied rigidly!.
The behaviors or mental acts are aimed at preventing or reducing distress or preventing some dreaded event or situation; however, these behaviors or mental acts either are not connected in a realistic way with what they are designed to neutralize or prevent or are clearly excessive!.
In addition to these criteria, at some point during the course of the disorder, the individual must realize that his/her obsessions or compulsions are unreasonable or excessive!. Moreover, the obsessions or compulsions must be time-consuming (taking up more than one hour per day), cause distress, or cause impairment in social, occupational, or school functioningWww@Answer-Health@Com
