How should I deal with the fact that I disagree with one of my psychiatrists dia!

Question: How should I deal with the fact that I disagree with one of my psychiatrists diagnoses!?
Im diagnosed with dysthymia, anorexia, post traumatic stress disorder and borderline personality disorder by my current psychiatrist!. I don't agree with the borderline personality disorder diagnosis as Ive read up on it in the DSM and on this site and the symptoms of the so called borderline i supposedly have that i identify with are also symptoms of dysthymia, depression, and post traumatic stress disorder which , in my opinion are more likely the causes of those symptoms!.!.!.!.but since im not a doc, i just get labelled and my opinion doesnt matter even though i AM self-educated and read the same diagnostic manuals they read!. How should I deal with this!? Say nothing and smile and nod!? or speak up and assert myself!? What would you do!? Do you think Im crazy and I should just listen to the psychiatrist and submit to the "experts"!? Should I change psychiatrists!?

After 15 years and 5 hospitalizations for inept diagnostics and pharmaceuticals I have learned one thing: SPEAK UP! It's YOUR illness, they are taking their highly-educated guesses!. After years of getting Itty-bitty doses of meds when I'm med resistant, I look them in the eye and tell them, "5mg won't do a blessed thing!. Your wasting our time"!. They tried to hang me with BPD and I read up on it and fought that one, too!. Speak up, calmly, politely, knowledgeably and state your case!. If you don't like the answer, say so!. "I want to speak to one of your colleagues" or "I want to see the head doctor"!. They won't say no!. You may wait a bit, but you're still father ahead!.

Not every doc is for you, and not every doc is a good doc!. If you can afford to change, do so!. You don't sound a bit crazy to me, and I know crazy! Go for it, GO FOR YOU!Www@Answer-Health@Com

You could get a second opinion!. You could also just bring it up with your doctor!. Just say "I disagree with what you diagnosed and here's why!.!.!." then present a cogent argument!. They'll probably be glad you show an interest in tackling your mental health in a serious way!. Good luck!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

You can get a second opinion!. The first psychiatrist I went to was the most arrogant doctor I ever met!.
He told me what my problem was, and he was 75% wrong!.
He never asked me anything, he knew what caused my depression!. (he said it was my marriage when the main reason was money and job problems)
He also wanted me to talk with one of his associates instead of my own counselor!.
He told me that it would be better for me to talk to a male counselor!. (My personal physician is a woman, so is my counselor, and so is the psychiatrist I replaced him with)
If the second opinion confirms what your psychiatrist said, there is a really good chance that he is right!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

Psychiatrists are people just like you, everything they know is from a book, just like doctors, everything they know is from books, so most of what they tell you is what they know!.!.they read in there book that if this this and this happens then they have this ect ect!.!.so talk with him/her and ask how the came to the conclusion, becuse if it was cancer and ur doctor said it was just a cold then your screwed!.!.they only know as much as there books tell them :)Www@Answer-Health@Com

Try another doctor or look into local groups and talk to people where you live to try and find a reliable doctor!. It does not mean your current one is wrong but they are not perfect!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

Yes you should find a new Doc but if he/she comes to the same conclusions you have to consider it likely!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

That should be the least of your concerns dear, from what i've read so far!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

You say you have been clean and sober for 33 days!. It take much longer than that to return to what ever is normal for you!. You are still being effected by the residuals that are part of your cell, and neurons!.
Would suggest you attend NA/AA meetings, you will find a lot of friend there, and be comfortable in the recovery process!.
Having said that, please continuing seeing the psychiatrist if you feel you need to do so!. I do however believe once you understand the 12 step program you will no longer need to see him, and will live a comfortable and contented life!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

A psychiatrist is nothing more than a pharmacologist!. Their purpose is to prescribe medication to help/alleviate your symptoms!. The diagnosis is not all that important!. The correct medication that works for you is!. On the first meeting he/she should ask why you are there & what you need his/her help with!. Describe your symptoms!. If meds are prescribed, try them!. You should be working together to reach your goal of wellness, & not concentrate on the 'label'!. If you don't care for their personality or bedside manner, move on & find someone else!. You are also entitled to ask how long the have been practicing & what they specialize in!. IMO, some doctors just want to be sure they get paid by an insurance co, & will circle an axis code they feel will satisfy same!. Try him/her out for awhile!. If you are not happy later, you can find someone else!. Good luck!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

You can totally disagree with the diagnosis, and if you feel it's wrong speak up! Don't let them start the treatment and after a while, things get only worse after wrong treatment, they'll say "well, to bad, we are sorry to tell you!.!.!.bla, bla, bla!.!.!."
There's nothing wrong with a doc who gives wrong diagnosis, it happens sometimes, he can't know what's going on in your mind, unless you tell him, so my suggestion is you tell your doc that you don't feel like the diagnosis is correct and you'd like to review it with your very help this time!. And if he keeps on saying he was right and doesn't consider it to be a good idea than he's a jerk, go see another doctor!.
Good luck and take care
best regards

Changing a psychiatrist is a valid option, but the second (or third) can also be worse!. Better ist to argue with him or her about the not accepted!. Important is also your relation to him/her!. Therefore ask HIM/HER many questions!. What relevant symptoms does he see!? Why does he favour this diagnosis!? Is your case a typical for such a diagnosis!?

A good psychiatrist must be able to answer all questions and conflicts about a diagnosis!. You can take a friend with you and discuss in a group about the diagnosis (you already shared with us)!.

I suggest make a list of what you accept and of what you refuse of the diagnostic symptoms, as listed in the DSM-IV for borderline!. Become awear of what it is, that is described in the list items, and what your own description of your problem would be!. If they dont match, discuss with every doctor or true friend!. (DSM-IV is nor complete nor always totally true!)

Very important is to become objective about yourself!. Being in anger is interfering with this aim!. But seeing the opposit and fighting for your point of view is also a strength!. (and often important for the post traumatic stress patients)!.

If your psychiatrist can accept this, and you beside of this you feel well, he/she is maybe a good psychiatrist, and you can go this way together with him!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

You should!. If your psychiatrist works for a big government funded agency!.!. thats usually bad news!. Look into small family owned practices or something like that!. I actually knew a girl with borderline personality disorder it's pretty bad and I hope you don't actually have it!. I saw a psychiatrist for years!.!. they told me I was bi polar, manic depressive, and that I had ADD definitely untrue!. I stopped seeing him!. Personally I don't think psychiatrist help unless you really want them to and in which case its usually a placebo effect!. My opinion it didn't work for me!.!. and it sounds like its not going well for you!. You should if you want to stay with therapy see someone your comfortable with shop around so to speak!. It's your health at risk be picky!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

When I was in 8th grade I was put in anger management sessions and I really wasn't angry!. I sometimes felt that the shrink was actually making me an angry person, so yeah maybe your psychatrist is right and you don't want to admit it or maybe you know yourself better than he does!. You should examine his claims, yet still be careful!.
