1 - About 30 years old
2 - No, but have thought about it - 44 now
3 - To escape from mental pain, or to gain control
4 - Yes
5 - I'm embarrassed, but what can I do!?
6 - Yes, again
7 - Mostly on my left arm from elbow to wrist (I am right handed)!. When I was really bad I once cut up my neck, breasts and legs!. When it was warm out I had to hide the scars!. I have had some close calls requiring stitches!. I would like to stress that people DO NOT cut as an attempt to suicide!. They cut because it is a form of control over a situation in which they do not have control!. Also, the actual physical pain reduces extreme emotional and mental pain!. There is actually a hormone released when you cut that causes a euphoric feeling, but believe me you definitely feel it the next day!.

Another good question to ask is whether people who cut were ever abused (this seems to be a pattern, although not for me)!. Also what do they use to cut!? I pretty much used razor blades, but when desparate knifes or would break light bulbs or anything I could find!. It sounds very sick, but people who cut are very encased in their emotions and can't see what they are doing!. Good luck, and hope this info helped!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

Kayla,

I have a cousin who is a school psychologist!. This is one of the issues he deals with!. We were talking about this issue last night, and he was a wealth of information on the subject!. If you are interested in interviewing him for your paper, email me, and I'll see if I can put you in touch with him!.

BTW, two things we discussed that you didn't mention is:
* Why this has become so widespread in the past 10 or 15 years, whereas when we grew up in the 1960s and 70s, it was so rare!.
* How he helps students deal with this!.
