My brother is 34 and is an alcoholic and was just diagnosed with bi-polar disorder last month after he found out that his wife and the mother of his 3 kids was cheating on him with one of his buddies!. He attempted suicide and was taken to jail ( the most stupid thing I have ever heard of a police officer doing to a sick man ) He should have been transported to a hospital instead!. He was trying to shoot himself!. Now I understand that this is a different situation!. I would remove any temptation from him!. Take his meds and only give him the amount prescribed for the time prescribed and be firm but gentle!. Let him know that you care and that other people do too!. Tell him that even when life is hard that there are reasons to still be here and that you are one of them!. Try to get him to cut back on the alcohol and if you cannot do that monitor him while he is drinking and if you get concerned having a mad dad is better than not having one at all!. Call an abulance and get him the help that he needs!. My brother is doing alot better each and everyday and everyday I call even if just to leave a voice message telling him that I love him and if he is having a bad day to call me and I am here!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

Get rid of the vicodin!. Its an opiate (contains the drug opium) which will probably send him tripping!. That along with the alcohol will give him some serious problems!.!.!.like depression!.

He needs to see a profeessional about it!. If you love him, you will make him see someone!. He probably only said that because he was drunk and didnt know what he was talking about, but he could easily kill himself WHILE he was drunk!.

Call childline, you will be anonymous and they will listen to your problems and help you!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

Go get some real help for him!. There are suicide hotlines, psychologists, and other professionals who are caring, smart people who can help your father!. Also, he may have a drinking problem, if he's saying such things whilst drinking!. Go contact those folks and not us internet people!. We're kinda worthless!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

You must understand that alcoholism, causes a chemical imbalance in the brain, and mental illness is going to occur!. Suicidal thoughts are a part of that mental illness!. Those that are addicted to alcohol get to the point where we realize that death is a better option than the life we are living!.
By the way by you going to alanon, it may just motivate you father to start attending AA meetings!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

Your father needs to be in treatment for his alcoholism!. I know, i have bipolar disorder and am a recovering alcoholic!. I am also disabled, your father's age, and have felt suicidal in my lifetime!.

You can't force your father to go into treatment!. He has to want that!. (but i think his doctors can put him into the hospital if he is a threat to himself or others)!.

From what you say, it sounds as if your father feels as if his problems are bigger than his ability to cope with them!. So, he wants to end his life!. And this could be quite true, what with the drinking and the mental illness!. Drinking, especially, clouds our thinking when we have an illness like bipolar disorder (believe me, i know)!.

There are a couple things you might do to help!. If he threatens suicide again, call 911 immediately!. They will send an ambulance and stick him right into the hospital because of the suicide threat!. It would be for his own good!.

Another thing you can do is talk with his psychiatrist or his staff!. While the psychiatrist can not talk about your father's case with you, i do believe you can let him know that your father is threatening suicide and seems to have given up on his life!. You might also tell them about the drinking/alcoholism!.

I am so sorry you've been put into this position, and i'm sure you're very worried and concerned!. Your father will realize someday how lucky he is to have someone like you -- who loves and cares for him!.

i hope things work out!.Www@Answer-Health@Com
