Does depression define who we are?!

Question: Does depression define who we are!?
My Therapist asked me a question today, one that I've been dreading anyone asking me!. She asked whether I really wanted to rid myself of my depression!. Now this may seem like a question that has only one obvious answer, but I've dreaded it because I've wondered (as she pointed out) whether my depression defines who I am as a person!.

She argued that perhaps I feel that the depression is a big part of me!. I wonder if I would have made the choices I've made in life if I didn't suffer from it!. Would I enjoy helping others so much!? Would I be studying Psychology!? Will these things change as I continue therapy and begin to really start getting help!?

It's such a tough thing to decide, as crazy and insane as it sounds!. Do I rid myself of this disease of the mind at the risk of losing who I am!? Or do I continue as I am, depressed and on the edge!. I'm even confusing myself here!.!.!. I hope someone can see what I mean!.

Any constructive thoughts appreciated!.

I don't think it defines you!. I think it is just part of who you are!. Perhaps it is as she says, a big part of you!. It still doesn't define YOU!. You are TD, who is suffering from depression!.!.!.!.NOT Depressed TD!. Do you agree!?

As weird as it may sound, it isn't a crazy and insane thing!. Isn't it funny how we with issues believe ourselves to be crazy and insane, when in fact we are not!? The really crazy people are not able to discern that!. Only those of us who are aware of our crazy and sometimes insane thoughts can distinguish between the healthy and crazy ones!.

Here's another crazy question for you!.!.!.are you happier being depressed!? What is it about being depressed that makes you think or feel like you are better off that way!? Do you get extra attention or are you busy in your deep mental pit of despair in your bad moments, avoiding all others!? Ok, so it was a few crazy questions, LOL!.

All of that being said, it sounds to me like you are similar to me!.!.!.!.you are TD, who suffers with depression!. I like to help others as well and also wanted to (but never have and just might go back to) study Psychology!. Not only to help myself, but because I live it and would be able to better understand where people are coming from and use my experiences to help others!. Is that how you think and feel as well!?

If so, treat your depression TD! You have cycles just like the rest of us, with good days and bad!. With treatment, you are able to be less on the edge and more aware of the good times and also more aware of what sets you into the bad times and more in control of yourself!. That will help you to help others!. You can't do it to the best of your ability though, if you don't help yourself first and put yourself first!.

I don't know if this helped you at all!. Feel free to email me to continue the conversation!. I felt like I was almost writing this myself and would enjoy chatting with you more!.

To me, you seem like a bright, intelligent, thoughtful and caring person and student who wants to help others in order to also help you (as a source of fulfillment)!. You just also suffer from depression along with being that person!. None of us are perfect or should expect to be!. We just need to be the best we can be at any given time, and accepted for it!.

Good luck to you!!Www@Answer-Health@Com
