Diagnose this?!

Question: Diagnose this!?
I have had two psychotic episodes in the past year!. The first consisted of just auditory and olfactory hallucinations with deluions!. The second episode consisted of auditory, olfactory, tactile, visual and gustatory hallucinations with extrememly bizzare delusions!. On both occasions i was sectioned on a psychiatric unit and told i had 'psychosis' but i want to know what the actualy diagnosis is! you dont just keep getting psychosis for no reason at all, whats the actual ilness, nobody seems to know!I thought it was schizophrenia at first (i was convinced) but my psychiatrist said that visual hallucinations were unusual in schizophrenia!. I was also (more so during the second episode) feeling 'possesed' and would sit and stand in funny posistions like somebody was making me do it!. Also during the second episode i had fights with myself like this:
"help!.!.!.who!.!.!.me!.!.!.who!.!.!.peter!.!.!.f**k off' I still have the hallucinations now but not as severe!. Anybody have an idea of what it is!?Www@Answer-Health@Com

Answers:
Psychosis doesn't always mean Schizophrenia!.

These are valid psychotic disorders that are not Schizophrenia (from the DSM-IV):

Brief Reactive Psychosis
Psychotic Disorder Not Otherwise Specified
Psychotic Disorder Due To General Medical Condition, with Hallucinations
Psychotic Disorder Due to General Medical Condition, with Delusions!.
Shared Psychotic Disorder
Paranoid Delusional Disorder
Substance Related Psychotic Disorder

It's also possible to have psychosis in the context of Major Depression, Bipolar Disorder, Post Traumatic Stress Disorder, and Borderline Personality Disorder!.

There are other Personality Disorders with behavior that is similar to Psychosis--Paranoid Personality Disorder, Schizoid Personality Disorder and Schizotypal Personality Disorder!.

Schizophrenia also includes symptoms of disorganized thinking, social withdrawal, and blunted emotions!.

A patient has to meet the full criteria of symptoms to be diagnosed with Schizophrenia!.

Based on the information you gave, I would say Psychotic Disorder Not Otherwise Specified!.

The way you wrote this question seems to be pretty well organized and it makes sense!. I have seen a lot of stuff written by people with schizophrenia and it usually doesn't make any sense at all!.

I think the diagnosis from your psychiatrist was most likely Psychotic Disorder Not Otherwise Specified!.

Did the treatment help!? That's actually more important than the label!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

Peter,

I'm with you : it does sound pretty much like schizophrenia!. There are few other psychiatric conditions that involve hallucinations and delusions!. Those kinds of breaks from reality are kind of what characterize schizophrenia I think!.

At the same time, there may be some medical conditions that have the same symptoms, so I would want to make sure that your Doc was up on those sorts of things too!.

If this stuff keeps happening and your Psych seems to not want to try and get on top of it, I would look for another psych !?

Hang in there!.Www@Answer-Health@Com
