Why is borderline personality disorder termed as a mental illness?!

this is only my OPINION, i am not a doctor, but i have lived and suffered with BPD for over 25 years!. so i only speak from my experience!. i dont call BPD a mental illness, i call it a learned disorder!. some people will disagree with that!. my BPD stems for a LONG history of child abuse (verbally, emotionally, physically) and neglect!. borderline personality is sometimes based on a premise of failure to develop in childhood!. this is why i say it is learned behavior, i wasn't born borderline!. after all the years of being treated inconsistently, the borderline manifested with in me!. i have to learn new ways of thinking, look differently at the way i perceive things, to change the outlook of my borderline personality disorder!. the name says it all!. its a PERSONALITY disorder, personality is learned, you aren't born with one!.
with all that said!.!.!.i say again, i am not a doctor and this is what i believe that borderline is!. not an illness but a disorder in the way of your thinking, perception and seeing only in black & white, all or nothing, fear of abandonment, suicidal behavior, gestures, threats, or self-mutilating behavior such as cutting, interfering with the healing of scars, or picking at oneself and the list just keeps going on and on!.

My guess is they feel that it has something to do with the Mind!. It is not like a 'tangible' sickness, for example, tumour which is a 'growth'; so anything they cannot figure or related to the mind, they just put it down to Mental illness!.
