Parent of a 23 yr old with OCD and depression? What can I do to help?!

Question: Parent of a 23 yr old with OCD and depression!? What can I do to help!?
My daughter just started an exciting new job, which I had hoped would really boost her confidence and self esteem!. She has been in treatment for OCD in the past and been on medication that has helped to some extent!.

She seems to be struggling a bit with her job now!. I am not sure how I can help her!. How do other OCD sufferers manage in life!? Is there any hope for a normal life!? Will I have to support her financially if she doesn't get any better!?

What are the options for OCD and depression sufferers!?Www@Answer-Health@Com

Answers:
hi im an adult and ive suffered from both these disorders, but with the right meds, celexa and seroquel, i was able to go back to school for registered nursing assistant, and now im working, but dont ever make her feel like she shouldnt feel a certain way, chances are she cant help it, but if problems talk to the doctor to increase the meds, good luckWww@Answer-Health@Com

If the OCD continues to interfere with her ability to hold down a job, I would consider antidepressants to treat the OCD!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

Her brain is most likely suffering from malnutrition, and psychiatric drugs will not fix that just cover it up!. i recommend nutrition for her brain =]
here is the product

Probably what you could do is engage her in some physical activities or sport!. Be around people to socialize about, that would get her mind off things!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

what is she obsessed with!?Www@Answer-Health@Com

Depression: I KNOW, from experience, how difficult it is, but once you drag yourself out of bed, throw on a dressing gown, and have a little time in the morning light, preferably doing easy stretching exercises, have a shower, a cuppa, and scrambled eggs and possibly bacon (these provide a lasting energy boost: no carbohydrates for 2 hrs, or extremely little; a teaspoon of sugar is OK)!. Splash cold water on your face, to revive you, as needed!. No daytime sleeping; only 8 - 9 hrs at night!.

Antidepressants work quicker than the following; 2 - 6 weeks, but you may have to adjust dosage, or types, whereas St!. John's wort is effective for most people, and doesn't develop tolerance and the few side effects are rare, and usually not severe!.

It doesn't cause sexual dysfunction, sleeping problems, or weight change, but takes 4 - 6 weeks to become effective!. A recent, independent German double blind study showed it to be as effective as Sertraline (marketed in the USA as Zoloft: a commonly prescribed antidepressant) in cases of major depression, with far fewer side effects, and those were generally better tolerated, with a lower rate of discontinuation!.

A multidimensional approach to treating depression without medication follows!. All except for no!. (7!.) are safe to use with medication, but not St!. John's wort, because of interactions, and it's sensible to check out anything else first with your doctor!.

(1!.) Take 4 Omega 3 fish oil supplements, daily: (certified free of mercury) it is best if consumed with an antioxidant, such as an orange, or grapefruit, or their FRESHLY SQUEEZED juice!. If vitamin E is added, it should be certified as being 100% from natural sources, or it may be synthetic: avoid it!.

(2!.) Work up slowly to at least 20 minutes minutes of exercise, daily, or 30 - 60 mns, 5 times weekly!. Too much exercise can cause stress, which isn't wanted when dealing with depression!.

(3!.) Occupational therapy (keeping busy allows little time for unproductive introspection, and keeps mental activity out of less desirable areas of the brain)!.

(4!.) Use daily, one of the relaxation methods in sections 2, 2!.c, 2!.i, or 11, and/or yoga, Tai Chi, and/or the EFT, in sections 2!.q, 2!.o, and section 53, at http://www!.ezy-build!.net!.nz/~shaneris whichever works best for you!.

(5!.) Initially, at least, some form of counselling, preferably either Cognitive Behavio(u)ral Therapy, or Rational Emotive Behavio(u)ral Therapy!.

(6!.) Maintain a mood chart, and daily activities schedule, as per page Z!.13, in section 2, at ezy build!.

(7!.) As options, if desired, either a known, effective herbal remedy, such as St!. John's wort, 900 mg (standardised hypericin content) 3 times daily, totalling around 2,700 mg, or supplements, such as SAMe, taken with a vitamin B complex which is certified as being 100% of natural origin, or Inositol (from vitamin and health food stores, some supermarkets, or mail order: view section 55)!.

Also, 80% of people in the Western world have low magnesium levels, and these are known to cause depression & anxiety!. Try the magnesium supplement types shown in http://www!.real-depression-help!.com/ Some of these will be available in pharmacies, or supermarkets!.

An improvement can be noticed in as little as a week, if a deficiency is the cause!. Also, iodised salt is preferable to regular salt!. This is a shortened version of the much more comprehensive post, which may be seen on page Z!.13, in section 2 of ezy build, above, but to gain full appreciation, it's really best to view the whole of section 2!.

If you are already taking antidepressants, and want to use the wort, I suggest that you taper off the antidepressant, over at least 2 weeks, with medical advice as to how long to take, before beginning the wort!.

OCD: If it takes up more than an hour, daily, gets worse, or interferes with your life to any great degree; seek therapy, because it can quickly take over a person's life!. See section 7, on OCD, at ezy build, below and also view section 6, since some consider to be an anxiety related disorder!.

Practice one of the relaxation methods on pages 2, 11, 2c, or 2i, daily, and when needed!. Also, give the EFT a good tryout, to see if it helps you!. There is also a version for use in public places, (if you like, you can claim to have a headache, as you massage/lightly tap your temples)!. "Even though I suffer from OCD, I deeply and completely accept myself!." Section 53, and pages 2, 2!.q and 2!.o at http://www!.ezy-build!.net!.nz/~shaneris also refer!.

(The following is a variant of EMDR therapy, which has been used successfully for those people suffering from Post Traumatic Stress Disorder, insomnia, and anxiety: it is easily learned, quick to use, yet can be very effective!. Such apparantly unusual techniques are easy to dismiss, out of hand, but give it a good tryout, because I use it every day)!. Prior to using either of the methods in the above paragraph, first sit comfortably, and take a deep breath!. Then, without moving your head, move your eyes from the left, to the right, and back again, taking around a second to do so (say: a thousand and one: this takes approximately a second)!. Repeat this procedure (without the words, although you can count, subvocally if you like) 20 times!. Then close your eyes and relax!. Become aware of any tension or discomfort you feel!.

Then open your eyes, and take another deep breath, and repeat step one, closing your eyes, and relaxing afterwards, in the same manner!. Then, repeat the procedure one last time!. Some people may find that this is all they need do!. Some people may find that this is all they need do!. With experience, you may find that you can practise this in public, with your eyes closed, which greatly widens the window of opportunity for its use, and avoids attracting unwanted attention!. It markedly reduces distractions, during the relaxation techniques, which makes them more effective, and rewarding!.

Because OCD is considered to be related to anxiety, try getting yourself some "worry beads", (ask at a religious supplies store, Catholic church, or Muslim mosque) and deliberately replace your former activity with moving them about between, or around your fingers: it takes about 30 - 40 reps, for most people to instill a new habit!. A stress ball, or even squeezing a tennis ball is an option!.

Self esteem, and self confidence are addressed in section 38, at ezy build!.Www@Answer-Health@Com
