Do genetics affect a person's chances of developing bipolar? If so how much?!

Question: Do genetics affect a person's chances of developing bipolar!? If so how much!?
My dad recently told me that my mother is bipolar (I kind of figured it out on my own) and that she refuses to be medicated!. She has been urged by multiple family physicians since the birth of my older brother to see treatment, but still refuses and is in denial about her condition!. Until my dad had confirmed my mother's condition, I hadn't payed attention to my own emotions and how I react!. I have started to worry that I have developed her condition, even though I have been told by my boyfriend that I react normally to situations!. I feel as though I am angry too much, or that I cause arguements!. Others don't seem to notice this as much as I do!. Is it possible that my fear of becoming like my mother has caused me to think I am being more drastic than I am!?Www@Answer-Health@Com

The little info you've given sounds to me like you're so worked up worrying you may have a disorder that you're increasing your stress levels and anxiety!. This probably furthers your fear of your mental health!. Just 'cause your mum has bipolar doesn't give you a high risk!. It may give you an increased chance, but that's increased from 0!. So it's not a big likelyhood!. I can relate, my mum has BDD, it's very hard to cope, and sometimes i've feared for my own mental health!. But it's just worry nothing more!.

Make sure you allow yourself 'me' time!. It's important to relax, take things easy and avoid stressful situations (for now)!. I think you may be anxious, so it's best for you to relax yourself!. :)Www@Answer-Health@Com

yes this is probably what happened!. you get so worried about becoming her that you forget to take the time to stop and be you for a while!. If you used to react normally chances are that you still do you just are comparing yourself to others moreWww@Answer-Health@Com

you shouldnt worry or think about it to much, just relax and take life as it comes!.
bi-polar is passed on through genetics so its probably best to get yourself checked out but untill you have some solid results dont worry!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

yes that is probably what has happened!. because you are so worried about becoming like your mother, you have made yourself very sensitive to your moods and reactions!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

Genna, I honestly hate to answer this question for the fat that my biology teacher in high shool was right!.

In the case of genetic traits, if one parent has extreme bipolar, the child has a little over 50% to get the disease!. If both parents are bipolar, the odds increases!. But if only one parent has a general case , the dfferences increase or derease!.

In your case, you maybe noticing your likeess to your mother, because you've been told your mom has it, so the power of suggestion is more acute!. Take everyones advice and come to terms that you could be causing this!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

My wife is a licensed Counselor that deals with people with disorders!. Your chances are a lot greater if you have a grandparent who is bipolar!. Usually, not always it skips a generation!. My daughter is bipolar but her mother isn't and neither am I but her mothers dad was severely bipolar!.

You, do sound like your scared that you could be!. If everyone around you thinks your fine then you probably are!. Because, people probably will draw away from you if your showing symptoms of bipolar!. Just be cautious if you start to having real ups and downs!.That is what bipolar is like!. It's a form of depression but it is more severe because unlike depression where people are just down all the time bipolar is like being on a roller coaster!. People with really severe bipolar are some times SchizophrenicWww@Answer-Health@Com
