CBT - what's it all about and does it work?!

Question: CBT - what's it all about and does it work!?
I've heard of CBT (cognitive behaviour therapy I think right!?) but could you explain how it works and if it works!. Does it help with depression!? What else is it used for!? ThanksWww@Answer-Health@Com

Answers:
CBT is a popular cognitive therapy which treats prominantly anxiety and depression, but is widely used for other things such as eating disorders!.

At a CBT session, the clinician will ask you about your feelings!. They will not focus on the past, so this treatment is more about moving forward!.
In the case of anxiety, the clinician will target the unrealistic thought that triggers the irrational worry, and they will replace that thought with something more balanced and rational!.
In depression, the clinician will challenge claims the patient makes, such as "If i dont do all my work, i'm a failure"!. They may do this by setting things such as homework to keep a diary of unfinished work, but also positives elsewhere in the persons life!.
This helps the person to realise that although there are things they have not finished that they would like to finish, there ARE positives in their life, and it helps the patient to focus in on those positives!.

CBT usually consists of 16-20 hours of treatment in total, and is said to treat effectively over 50% of people within this time!.
It is usually carried out once a week!.

In the U!.K, CBT is free on the NHS!. However, it is quite expensive if you have to pay for it - but this is due to it's intensive and successful nature!.
It free's a lot of people from issues and disorders, and can act as a longer term solution to a problem compared to drug therapies, which don't treat the route cause of the problem!.

Hope this helps!Www@Answer-Health@Com

Dont have an answer to this but interested in the question!.

I am doing CBT through a counsellor but only see them once a month!. She has gave me coursework to do CBT at home!.

Just away to start it, is like having homework plus i have a CD to listen to!.

Best of luck!Www@Answer-Health@Com

The idea of cbt is that our thoughts contol our feelings (known as warped thinking) so instead of taking responsibility for situations and blaming yourself you can analyse your interactions with others): Homework may be given!.Www@Answer-Health@Com
