Question: Telling my parents I might have social anxiety disorder!?
I want to tell my parents, particulary my dad, that there is a chance that I have social anxiety disorder!. I am sixteen years old and I cannot handle social situations!. I am just afraid of socializing!.

In fact, I've never had a boyfriend or kissed anyone yet!.

My dad is forcing me into social situations and I just cannot handle it!. I get all shaky and emotional just thinking about it and I need help!.

My parents never can take a lot of things seriously, so I really need help I sitting them down and tell them I need help!. It's especially difficult for me to be candid with them!.

I'm afraid my dad won't let me go to therapy because he'll say something like it's just a phase or something!.

How can I do that!?

BTW, CONVERSATION STARTERS WOULD BE GREAT!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

Well, just remember that it is not something to be embarrassed about!. Best thing you can do is get treatment and talk to your family about how you are feeling!. They may be a great support system!. There is no easy way to say it, so just sit down and start talking!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

I totally understand, it's social phobia, I have suffered my whole life and I'm 35, It wont completely go away but you can learn to control it with time and positive thinking, I have a hard time going to the grocery store and specially the bank; Be open with your parents and also seek the help of your school psychologist!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

As someone who used to suffer from SAD, I use to have the same feelings, especially in HS!. But when I went to college, I basically forced myself to be out there and socialize with others!. You should try some anti-anxiety medications!. Tell your parents to go online and find out more about the disease!.

I'm a person who loves social situations, but I think you should try to start out really small and just keep going further with it!. As for your dad, just tell him and explain how you feel!. Ask him to let you go to at least one session with him accompanying you!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

I think the reason why you're like the way you are is because of how your parents have raised you!. Often when parents are very judgmental, very critical or overprotective of their children, the children grow up to be very passive and shy!.

I think you should definitely tell your dad even if you think he might think you're just overreacting!. At least he'll know then that you have a problem and I think any decent parent would do something to help their child who has a problem!.

If he does refuse to let you go to therapy, I think you should go to your school counsellor and talk to him/her about it without letting your parents know!. Your counsellor may even direct you to seek more specialised help like seeing a psychiatrist or whatever if the problem is that bad!.

I'm telling you, speaking about it is the only way to get through this!. You simply can't keep it bottled inside because that may worsen the problem!. I have been through this myself and found talking through my problems to be the best way of getting through it!.

Good luck!Www@Answer-Health@Com
