Are panic attacks common?!

Question: Are panic attacks common!?
And are they likely to be a precursor to other types of mental illness!?

I suffered with panic attacks a few years ago and once I figured out what they were I taught myself to control and prevent them with breathing exercises etc!.

Occasionally now, when I'm feeling stressed and under pressure I recognise the signs that one is looming and I am able to deal with it immediately!.

I had always been a worrier as a child and anxious/cautious in my early teens!. I'm 23 now!. It doesn't affect my daily life, and in general I am happy and busy with my education and social life!.

I'm wondering if its possible that I would develop a mental illness later in life that would be would be related to this!?Www@Answer-Health@Com

I agree with all the answers so far!. I can speak from personal experience!. I had panic attacks in my twenties, after my father died, and I recognise similarities to your thought processes!. Thirty years on, I am confident and handling a high-pressure job; and all that is in the past, although still fresh in my mind!. You will be fine! Enjoy life!Www@Answer-Health@Com

I think that if you're managing to control these panic attacks now with your breathing exercises, then you're well on your way to beating them and you shouldn't worry about developing any other mental illness!.

What might be best to do is to investigate other weapons you could use in your armoury against them to give you more confidence in dealing with them in times of stress!.

Perhaps asking your doctor to refer you to a psychologist who could give you relevant tools to use would be a good move!. Different people find different things work for them: muscle relaxation exercises, Cognitive Behavioural Therapy, exercise, meditation being just some that you could try!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

It's possible you might develop chronic or situational anxiety directly from the panic attacks!. Other than that, don't worry!. Panic attacks are more common than most people think!. If you're able to deal with them without using meds, that's fine!. If they become worse, you may want to consider an anti-anxiety drug such as Xanax!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

Panic attacks aren't a precurser to some other, worse illness!. Often anxiety and depression appear together for people, but not necessarily!. If you're happy and have the panic attacks managed, you're doing fine!. It wont get worse!. In fact, it will probably get better!. You say you've taught yourself how to manage the attacks!.!.!. it will only get easier as time passes!. You'll be fine!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

There is no evidence to suggest any further development of illness!. In fact you have handled your attacks incredibly!. Recognising the signs and dealing with it like you do is highly commendable!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

its great that you manage them i had to take meds to manage them!. it could be connected to depression and often is, but other then that i dont see any connection with anything else, just keep doing what you are doing and you willl be fineWww@Answer-Health@Com
