Here are a couple of good websites on the topic:
(There are tons if you Google it)

That second site has a good quote!.!.!. which is:

It's not self-injury if the primary purpose is:

- sexual gratification

- body decoration (e!.g!., body piercing, tattooing)

- spiritual enlightenment via ritual

- fitting in or being cool

Many people believe that people do it to get attention or to "fit in" with their friends!.!.!. but that's not the case!.

There are many reasons people self-injure!. For me, personally, (and for many others) it was because I couldn't express the pain I was feeling on the inside!. I also dealt with low self-esteem for a very long time!. I felt as though I deserved it!.!.!. like I had to be punished!. It felt good though!.!.!. not in a sexual way or in a way that made me "happy"!.!.!. but I felt a huge release!.!.!. like my blood was actually all of my pain and I was draining it out of me!.

Another reason people self-injure (as strange as it may sound) is because they like dressing the wounds!. They feel like they're mothering or taking care of themselves when they do that!.

Anyway, the bottom line is that self-injury is very misunderstood!. The reactions of friends and family almost ALWAYS hurt the situation!.

The most common reactions are, "If you don't stop, I won't be your friend anymore," or, "What the heck is wrong with you!?"

These reactions further isolate the person!.!.!. cutting is an addictive behavior!. Many surveyed said that it would be easier to quit smoking than it would be to quit cutting!. (I can attest to this because I did quit cutting and it was one of the biggest struggles of my life!.!.!. the urge is still there sometimes!.)

If someone you know is dealing with self-injury, be as loving and as supportive as possible!. Get this person help, but above all, READ UP on it!. Learn how to treat someone who is going through this!. Understand what is going on inside their head!. They're not weird!.!.!. they're not doing it because they "like pain" or anything like that!.!.!. there is a very serious and deeper issue at hand that needs to be dealt with!. This person will need tons of good friends and support!.

The last thing to remember is to NOT freak out or condemn a person if they slip up and cut!. The most important thing is that they are TRYING!. It's very hard to stop!.!.!. give them options!. Tell them to call you if they feel like cutting!. Tell them to go outside and go for a walk!.!.!. write down their feelings!.!.!. the only way I was able to stop cutting is because I found other outlets for my emotions!.!.!. but I had to train myself to do those things instead of what my reaction would have been, so it was quite a long process!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

I don't think you can say just one "WHY" people cut or mutilate themselves!. A girl we had at a place I worked cut herself because she was emotionally numb!. It had to do with sexual abuse when she was younger!. She cut her arms so she could feel something!.
Another cutter I knew cut himself from extreme self loathing!. He hated himself and was trying to recreate himself by modifying his own appearance!.
It is curable with therapy!. You can't cure the cutting so much as you must cure the underlying cause!. It can be very difficult to cure as it is addictive behavior and tends to snowball over time!. Best to catch it early and get them into therapy before it reaches its' later stages!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

Cutting is in most cases a way to reduce stress or psychological pain!.

Cutting releases the brain chemical called endorphin which reduces stress temporarily!.It is 3 times more addictive then morphine so this is often the reason why many teens repeatedly cut themselves and they often cannot stop it by themselves like most addictions

The longer the individual cuts himself the less and less of the good feeling his brain receives due his brain creating new opioid receptors and thus allowing the transfer of pain impulses to the brain so he must cut himself deeper and more often to get more of that good feeling until eventually he cuts his veins in the most severe case!.

Yes it is curable!.Depression is a disease like any other which is caused by the omega 3 fatty acid deficiency in the brain and body and most people have it due to their omega 3 poor diet!.

I strongly believe like many other that it can cure depression and many other diseases permanently!.My assumption is based on my personal experiences with omega 3 rich food!.I have perfect health because of my omega 3 diet!.I do not suffer from stress or depression in any form!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

realistically, it could be symptom of a deeper issue!. abuse, poor self image, feeling that things are out of control are just a few possibilities but it basically boils down to emotions!. and with therapy to pin point the source of the problem, it can be treated and cured!. but its more of a journey than a simple step and everything is done!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

I do it because i was sexually abused and it 'releases' the infection (the infection being the abuse), it cant be cured because theres nothing to cure, you either do it or you dont, you choose to do it!. Its hard not to do it at times but after you do it you regret it later on!. Its a stupid thing to do!.!.!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

i cut myself on my hip!.!.!.
i get a amazing high from it!.!.!.!.i admit its a stupid thing to do!.!.!.but its addicting and i need help for it!.!.!.!.Www@Answer-Health@Com
