I'm close to positive that I have OCD but...?!

Question: I'm close to positive that I have OCD but!.!.!.!?
I'm afraid to tell my parents that I want to get tested!. It wouldn't be so bad if I was positive that I had it but I'll feel really embarrassed if I go to get checked and it comes back negative!.

What kind of questions do they ask to confirm the disease!? I've taken online tests but I know they're close to useless!. I took this test http://www!.mental-health-today!.com/tests!.!.!. and it was the best one I could find!. according to that I have "clinically significant" obsessions and compulsions!. Is this anything like what the doctor asks!?Www@Answer-Health@Com

Answers:
There's no 'test' as such - at least not one that is clearly positive or negative!. Doctors will basically begin by asking you *why* you think you have OCD, about when you get it, how bad your symptoms are, etc!.!.!. Then they'll go on to ask about some of the specific symptoms associated with the disease that you may not have mentioned!. That's basically the 'test'!. It doesn't really!. You can be diagnosed with OCD if you fit the 'clinical criteria' - a set of symptoms and signs associated with OCD; or if you don't quite fit in but the doctor feels the picture is close enough anyway!.

The hallmarks of OCD are either obsessions (thoughts that you can't get out of your head) or compulsions (the strong desire to do certain acts or rituals that you can't get out of your head and cause you anxiety if you don't do them)!. And to be diagnosed you either have to be distressed by these, or have an awful lot of your time taken up by them!. OCD often comes with *particular* obsessions or compulsions, like hand-washing - and some of these are listed in that test that you posted!.

With ALL mental illness it never really matters if you fit a particular diagnosis or not - the diagnosis isn't set in stone anyway!. If you're experiencing mental anxiety that is causing you a lot of distress, and you feel something might be wrong, it's probably a good idea to talk to someone you trust!. Doctors are often a good choice because they can pick up those times you have a serious, treatable illness AND are have a lot of experience in dealing with more general problems!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

Instead of trying to diagnose yourself, just tell your parents you would like to see your doctor, and let the the doctor diagnose you!.

If your doctor says you have it, then he can help!. If not, then maybe you just need reassurance that it isn't a problem for you!.

OCD can be had at varying levels, and if you address your concerns early on in your life, you may be able to keep them from overwhelming you later!.

It may be that counseling would also be a good idea for your overall mental health!. If you are still afraid to talk to your parents about it, you could see a school counselor if you are in public schools or college--probably for no charge!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

The questions are very accurate to the signs of OCD!. You need to see a pyschiatrist!. You really can't self diagnose yourself!. You may have some other mental illness or perhaps nothing at all!. You might just be a bit of a perfectionist or perhaps worry too much!. It may just help to talk to a therapist in that case!. If you do have a mental illness, prescripiton meds!. and therapy work best when used together!. I wish you the best of luck! Talk to your parents!. You need to take care of yourself!. And it's not really a negative or a positive type of result thing like a HIV test or something!Www@Answer-Health@Com

there is no test for ocd, it is a matter of ruling things out one at a time, trial and error, and even with meds and a good shrink chances are you are going to be that way forever, my daughter is in her tenth year of dealing with it, several pill bottles and several useless shrinks later and she is just worse, they wont be able to make a diagnosis with just one visit, it will take a lot trips to come to that conclusion!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

a dr!. will not diagnose you with out seeing you for several visits!.!. to get a feel for whether you are just repeating what you have heard or if you are truly suffering from it!.!.!.

stop researching it and just see a doctor!.!.!.

People have variying degrees of the disorder!.!.!. (it is not a disease)

nothing to be embarrassed about!.!.all it would do is assist you in being able to regain control of your life and actions!.!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

IT SHOULDN'T be a big deal! Everyone has a bit of OCD in them, ***only when it get in the way of your daily life*** it is then considered a "disorder" ( which i'm sure you parent would start to notice when you stand in the same place and repeat the same activity for a couple hours) Then maybe you should tell them -_-Www@Answer-Health@Com

I am not sure what test you think there is for OCD!. There are screenings but they are not that reliable!. Some people are very organized and can score high on an OCD!. Talk to your physician and tell him your symptoms!. He will tend to ask similar questions!. You may need to see a counselor to help with managing anxiety more than anything else!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

Everyone has a little bit of OCD!. Does yours interferes with your normal everyday life!. If yes, you have to go to a psychologist to be properly diagnosed!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

MY AUNT THOUGTH SHE HAD OCD SO SHE WENT AND GOT IT TESTED CHANCES ARE IF YOU THINK YOU HAVE IT YOU DO GET IT CHEAKED OUT BECAUSE YOU NEVER KNOW AND IF THE RESULTS COME BACK NEGATIVE THAN JUST SAY HEY BETTER TO KNOW THEN TO PONDER ABOUT IT!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

Is there a family history of OCD !?Www@Answer-Health@Com

just ask ur self do u have a rutine obssesion if yes just talk to ur parents they will and can helpWww@Answer-Health@Com

do you watch Monk on the usa channel !? do you act like him!?Www@Answer-Health@Com

They will look at the whole picture to make a diagnosis!. I'm sure you'll get asked questions similar to those you've looked at, plus tons about your family, cognitive processes, and dozens pertaining to other conditions (to rule out that its not b/c of something else) Things that are considered obsessions for some people are just learned behaviors for others!. I think the main deciding factor is the extent that these behaviors control you, or hinder your ability to live 'normally'!.

If you are in HS or college, you can usually get a mental health evaluation through the school, and as long as you are over 15 and they don't believe you are of harm to yourself or someone else, your parents never have to know!.!.!.Its not considered 'curable' but they treat with talk therapy, meds and most communities have support groups (similar to AA) too that teach coping techniques!. On a side note OCD tend to be a co-morbid condition, if you are diagnosed with that, a good psych will do an extremely thorough evaluation!.!.!.don't be surprised if you find you have an underlying mental health condition triggering the OCD!. I'm not saying that to scare you, but for many people treating the first condition generally causes the OCD to subside!. Good luck!Www@Answer-Health@Com
