Endogenous depression?!

Question: Endogenous depression!?
I was diagnosed with endogenous depression 11 years ago, since then I have been on anti-depressants daily!. My moods change from day to day and I have no drive to pursue anything!.
I am wondering if it is possible that I may be moving to a different phase of mental state, like bi-polar, and is the a "normal" progression!?Www@Answer-Health@Com

Answers:
endogenous depression is often misdiagnosed with bipolar disorder!. they are not the same and they will never 'progress' into the same thing!. so no, that is not a normal progression!. you are either bipolar are have manias/depressions or you are endogenously depressed!. if you are unsure, consult a psychiatrist further into the issue!.

many people with endogenous depression do not respond to medication at all!.!. and this is known!. so why, if your medicine is not working, are you still on it!? medication can help and may be the only help, but only certain kinds!.

it only sounds like you are falling more into depression, not into another state!. however your symptoms do not sound like bipolar disorder!. talk to your doctor or find a new one that knows more about endogenous depression!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

Endogenous depression is "clinical" or "major" depression for which there is not an apparent precipitating cause!. Bipolar disorder is a completely different mood disorder where one cycles from a state of mania to a state of depression (or in Bipolar II from a state of "normal" to a state of depression!.) It is not normal to go from Major Depression to Bipolar Disorder!.

However, it is possible someone might diagnose you with Bipolar II now, because Bipolar is the current "popular" diagnosis among professionals when they don't know what to use!. (For a long time it was DID, then it was Asperger's, now it is Bipolar!.)

It sounds like you are going into a major depressive episode -- having no drive to do anything, moods changing a lot, etc!.!.!.also sounds like you may need new antidepressants, perhaps the meds are no longer working for you!. Have you told your psychiatrist that you are getting depressed again!?You may need to combine some medications and see if that helps you get past this bout of depression!.

Just some thoughts from someone who has fought depression off and on since the mid 1980s and continually since 1997 and currently takes a cocktail of 5 different meds to fight depression, PTSD and dissociation!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

I really don't know what "endogenous depression" is!.!.!?!? I am bipolar and have been for many many years!. It makes you have real high moments, like promiscuous behavior without caring about the consequences, or the other side a very very low, that Marks you just want to go to bed and never get up!. I am on medications for bipolar and I am in a happy medium with myself!. Therefore; you should ask you psychologist about your meds!. They may need to be changed, you may have taken one or more to many years and have become immune to it!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

Depression: I KNOW, from experience, how difficult it is, but once you drag yourself out of bed, throw on a dressing gown, and have a little time in the morning light, preferably doing easy stretching exercises, have a shower, a cuppa, and scrambled eggs and possibly bacon (these provide a lasting energy boost: no carbohydrates for 2 hrs, or extremely little; a teaspoon of sugar is OK)!. Splash cold water on your face, to revive you, as needed!. No daytime sleeping; only 8 - 9 hrs at night!. Antidepressants work quicker than the following; 2 - 6 weeks, but you may have to adjust dosage, or types, whereas St!. John's wort is effective for most people, and doesn't develop tolerance and the few side effects are rare, and usually not severe!.

It doesn't cause sleeping problems, or weight change, but takes 4 - 6 weeks to become effective!. A recent, independent German double blind study showed it to be as effective as Sertraline (marketed in the USA as Zoloft: a commonly prescribed antidepressant) in cases of major depression, with far fewer side effects, and those were generally better tolerated, with a lower rate of discontinuation!. Unlike antidepressants, where sexual dysfunction is a common side effect, it happens much more rarely with St!. John's wort (I have noticed no effect in this area)!.

A multidimensional approach to treating depression without medication follows!. All except for no!. (7!.) are safe to use with medication, but not St!. John's wort, because of interactions, and it's sensible to check out anything else first with your doctor!.

(1!.) Take 4 Omega 3 fish oil supplements, daily: (certified free of mercury) it is best if consumed with an antioxidant, such as an orange, or grapefruit, or their FRESHLY SQUEEZED juice!. If vitamin E is added, it should be certified as being 100% from natural sources, or it may be synthetic: avoid it!. Also take a vitamin B complex which is certified as being 100% of natural origin; a deficiency in vitamin B9 (folic acid, or folate) is known to cause depression!.

(2!.) Work up slowly to at least 20 minutes minutes of exercise, daily, or 30 - 60 mns, 5 times weekly!. Too much exercise can cause stress, which isn't wanted when dealing with depression!.

(3!.) Occupational therapy (keeping busy allows little time for unproductive introspection, and keeps mental activity out of less desirable areas of the brain)!.

(4!.) Use daily, one of the relaxation methods in sections 2, 2!.c, 2!.i, or 11, and/or yoga, Tai Chi, and/or the EFT, in sections 2!.q, 2!.o, and section 53, at http://www!.ezy-build!.net!.nz/~shaneris whichever works best for you!.

(5!.) Initially, at least, some form of counselling, preferably either Cognitive Behavio(u)ral Therapy, or Rational Emotive Behavio(u)ral Therapy!.

(6!.) Maintain a mood chart, and daily activities schedule, as per page R, in section 2, at ezy build!.

(7!.) As options, if desired, either a known, effective herbal remedy, such as St!. John's wort, (the strength varies, but the supplier should be using a standardised hypericin content, so follow the directions) or supplements, such as SAMe, or Inositol (from vitamin and health food stores, some supermarkets, or mail order: view section 55)!.

Also, 80% of people in the Western world have low magnesium levels, and these are known to cause depression & anxiety!. Try the magnesium supplement types shown in http://www!.real-depression-help!.com/ Some of these will be available in pharmacies, or supermarkets!.

An improvement can be noticed in as little as a week, if a deficiency is the cause!. Also, iodised salt is much preferable to regular salt (one of the treatments in books on depression is iodine drops)!.

This is a shortened version of the much more comprehensive post, which may be seen on page R, in section 2 of ezy build, above, but to gain full appreciation, it's really best to view the whole of section 2!.

If you are already taking antidepressants, and want to use the wort, I suggest that you taper off the antidepressant, over at least 2 weeks, with medical advice as to how long to take, before beginning the wort!.

Bipolar disorder is often misdiagnosed: My standard post follows: See bipolar disorder, at ezy build, below, in section 10, and take the quiz, if unsure, and if the results are positive, ensure you get an expert diagnosis from a mental health professional, not doctors, who are much better dealing with physical ailments, and don't diagnose complex disorders like bipolar disorder, schizophrenia, and borderline personality disorder often enough to develop any real expertise!.

Bipolar disorder usually involves major mood swings, which occur without apparent cause, and often over many months, or a matter of years, rather than days, as with most people (unless rapid cycling)!. I'd take 4 Omega 3 fish oil supplements daily, replacing 2 of them with cod liver oil supplements in the winter months, (or, as probably a better alternative to the 2 cod liver oil supplements: 1 teaspoonful of cod liver oil, with a little butter, to ensure its use; I take mine on sourdough rye bread, or toast, covered with fishpaste, and pepper, to mask the strong taste)!. Those people who receive adequate exposure to sunlight, daily, won't need the vitamin D from cod liver oil, but many people, particularly those in latitudes far from the equator, find this difficult, to achieve!.

If you decide to use allopathy, (modern Western medicine) I recommend trying Lithium Carbonate, or Lithium Citrate!. (regular tests are necessary, for these) before trying the other mood stabilisers, but if you aren't good at taking medications regularly, drinking adequate water, and keeping up your salt intake, something else, such as Depakote, or Lamictal, may suit you better!. Check out "lithium" at http://www!.drugs!.com/, and http://crazymeds!.us/ and always research medications first, (read, and keep the labels/information sheets) so you will be aware of the risks, and on the lookout for side effects!. (Personally, if I wasn't bipolar type 1, and didn't experience hallucinations, or serious delusional states, I know I'd first try the orthomolecular, and Omega 3 fish oil supplements, vitamins, minerals; a herbal remedy, and a mostly raw food diet, for several months!. Note: St!. John's wort, and also antidepressants, may cause mania, or hypomania, in people with bipolar disorder!. I'd aso eat in accordance with my "nutritional type"!. Enter that term in the searchbar at http://www!.mercola!.com/

If not considerably improved, after several months, consult your primary mental health care provider: you may be one of those who need medications to prevent this progressive illness from getting even worse!. If bipolar type 1, an antipsychotic medication may also be needed!. Everyone should take the Omega 3 supplements, or preferably "krill oil" for its other health benefits: use the searchbar at http://www!.mercola!.com/ !. Some people refuse medication, using supplements, and a selective, mostly raw food diet (I do not recommended trying this, if bipolar 1, unless you aren't troubled by hallucinations, or delusional states)!.

Maintain the treatments for the depressive phase, in section 2, at: http://www!.ezy-build!.net!.nz/~shaneris Some topics in section 10 include: treating bipolar disorder with supplements, vitamins, minerals, and herbal remedies (except for St!. John's wort, which may cause mania, or hypomania)!. As with all medications, there are risks, and the possibility of side effects, which is why I inform people of the alternatives, to see if they can cope sufficiently well, without resorting to medications!. Don't use medications and supplements together, without medical advice, except for Omega 3, which is safe, anytime!. It is not unknown for those discontinuing medication, and trying the alternative treatments, (which are not quick to work) to lose their jobs, because of unacceptable behavio(u)r, so I'd start 1 week before vacation, and closely monitor the situation, and use medical advice!.Www@Answer-Health@Com
