Anti depressants, and coming off them?!

Question: Anti depressants, and coming off them!?
Im recently off my antidepressants (citalopram 20mg)
I was perscribed 1 pack which lasts four weeks from to doctors to use to wean myself off, i was on a full tablet a day for three weeks, half a tablet a day for 1 week and half a tablet every other day for the remainder (just under two weeks)

Ive been offthem for just over a week now, and feeling mentally and physically drained!.!.!.!. as though my kids hate me and a playing up just to make me break down!.!.!.!.

has anybody else out there come off meds and felt like this, what did you do!? are my feelings normal!? will i overcome them in time!? The last thing i want to do is go back on them, as i will feel like i have failed!. My husband keeps telling me i will adjust and get used to being off the tablet, but im not sure I will, i know he doesnt want me to go back on them!. He doesnt seem to understand the strength and courage i need just to get up in the mornings at the moment!. i look forward to going to bed, but fear getting up next day!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

Hi,

I agree with the answerers you have already received!.
I'd go and see your doctor, as soon as you can!.

I once tried to go cold turkey when I thought I was 'better', wow, so not the right thing to do, I felt terrible!. My mood was awful, all my symptoms were exacerbating, so I went back to my doctors, slapped hand, and told NEVER to do it again (cold turkey) without my doctors knowledge, and get help with weaning off them!.

I have been on (and off) anti depressants since I was 16 (I'm 27)-prozac (which did not help me at all), Citalopram, Mitrazopine (don't know if the spelling is right), cant remember the names of the others!. I am now on venlafaxine (efexor MR) 3x75mg=225 mg in the morning!. Thankfully I found my new female doctor WAS right in her choice to prescribe me with this!.

Were you asked if you wanted to be referred to see a counsellor/psychologist or anything like that!? It may help you, especially with you saying 'my kids hate me, and playing up just to make me break down', heck, if you are able, print out your question and take it with you when you see your doctor (ASAP)!.

If your doctor is good they may well give you a new prescription!.

Please don't see yourself as a failure for going back on to antidepressants, I think you should be seeing yourself as a person who is going through a lot, and HELPING yourself to get through it (the famous black dog)!.

And as for your hubbies remarks which you really DO NOT NEED TO HEAR!. Has HE ever had depression!? I'm guessing NO he hasn't, or he would know how you are feeling now!

Why don't you go to the library to get some books on depression for your hubby to read!? It may help him to understand what you are going through!.

I know what you mean about 'the strength and courage' to get up in the morning!. Sometimes I feel like this, but not very often now that I'm on the 'right for me' antidepressant!.

I am also seeing a great psychotherapist, once a week !. Which is a place to vent emotions, talking about ANYTHING I need to talk about!.

you take good care of yourself,

I came off of citalopram before!. i know what you mean it was absolutely horrible like you say!. it is completely normal because i spoke to my doctor who said that most people go through it!. I had to be practically dragged out of bed by my mum for school and i promise you it does get better because it feels like it never will but it does!. however i would say go to your doctor just to check you are ok within yourself!. good luck!. i hope you feel beter soonWww@Answer-Health@Com

I know exactly how you feel, I've been on and off em twice!. First time I went on em they really helped me a lot, fabulous, just level out your mood wonderful and no more pmt, but after a coupla years I came off em, lasted a while like a year or two and had to go back on em, second time on em not the same you felt like you needed a higher dose!. Came off em a few years ago now and have thought about goin back on em time and time again, but I'm sure the impact lessens so haven't done it!.
I'd try and keep off em if I were you, try St John's Wort (altho I must admit they didn't really work for me)!.
Try and go on holiday more (if you can spare the cash) or join a leisure club (if you have the cash and the time!) and create some me time!Www@Answer-Health@Com

You need to go back to your Dr!. I stopped Prozac without any problems, and your symptoms sound like relapse!. What your husband thinks is not important at this time!. It might be you need a different prescription!. Depression isn't anything to mess around with, so call your Dr!. and tell him or her what you are going through!. Good LuckWww@Answer-Health@Com
