Is bipolar a dangerous disease?!

Question: Is bipolar a dangerous disease!?
how!?Www@Answer-Health@Com

Answers:
If unmedicated or not on effective meds:

Suicidal during depression, mixed states (depressed and manic together, very bad place), or manic psychosis!.

Potential for harm to self or others during extreme mixed states or mania, being delusional is usually involved!.

When medicated, there's the potential that meds will cause damage to internal organs creating health problems and necessitate a switch to less effective meds!. This is the one most ppl don't think about or care about!. It is the one that scares me because it is my life!. Because I have bipolar and decided to be med compliant and do all the right things in order to live a well balanced and productive life, if my kidneys or liver fail, I don't qualify for organ transplant!. An alcoholic can but I can't!. How right is that!?

Contrary to popular opinion, ppl without mental illnesses are a considerably greater threat to society than those with them!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

It depends what you mean by dangerous!. When someone is bipolar and depressed they may be actively suicidal!.
If however they are in a manic phase they may become disinhibited and/or delusional and put themselves or others at risk!.
Having said that it's a condition that can often be managed very well with medication and therapy and can present few problems to the sufferer, it all depends on the individual!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

Bipolar, or manic-depressive, disorder can be extremely dangerous!. By definition, a bipolar personality swings wildly from extreme happiness (to the point of elation and/or unrealistic self-expectation) to depression!.

Both of these disorders can be extremely dangerous!. In the case of the manic component, patients may believe themselves to be able to achieve goals that are simply outside of their abilities!. A common example is a patient making inappropriate financial investments (including leaving a job, etc) with the belief that through their sheer intelligence and drive they can attain great things!. This can lead to personal financial disaster!.

In the case of the depressive states, like all depression, extreme sadness leads to bouts of paranoia, fatigue, and suicidal tendencies!.

Depending upon the degree of bipolarism (read: How severe the swings are, and how often the swings occur) standard clinical treatment can include professional therapy, medication, and in very extreme cases, even institutionalization!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

I have bipolar, and I've tried to kill myself once and several other times I've been suicidal and had to be hospitalized!. So yes it is dangerous to yourself!.

It could also be dangerous toward others, although that is not as common!. Some manic people become homicidal or sexually abuse others!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

Yes it can be!.

It causes drastic mood swings!. You have periods of high energy, and "manic" behavior, to an extreme low depression!. Depending upon the severity of the problem, it can make a person unable to function in every day life!. And in the depressions it can cause a person to become suicidal!.

It's also difficult for family and friends to deal with, as the way some treats people changes when they are really high and then changes when they hit lows!.

The other dangers are those who do require medication to control the mood swings, will often feel so good that they don't think they need to take the meds anymore!. Then they crash again!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

People with this disease swing between episodes of depression and periods of mania!.
