Question: Is a therapist suppose to keep secrets if you ask her to!?

Yeah, she's SUPPOSED to, but in my experience they are a lot less confidential than you'd like them to be!. It's okay to tell her stuff that nobody else would be interested in, but if you tell her anything which would affect someone else (for example, your parents, if you told her you wanted to kill yourself) or even another one of her patients, she's likely to rat you out to them!. However, if there is something that would harm someone else that you just HAVE to tell her, you should, because a therapist's help rarely makes a situation worse!. She might be able to help you with the situation!.Www@Answer-Health@Com
The standard for confidentiality is that what you tell them is confidential unless you take about harming yourself or harming others!. This might extend to something illegal that would harm someone else!. If it's only illegal but would not harm you or someone else, your therapist should keep it confidential!.Www@Answer-Health@Com
Yes, therapists are supposed to keep secrets!. Just in case you can ask him/her to not tell anyone and they'll probably assure you that your talk is completely confidential!.

If you are making threats to do harm to yourself or others I believe the therapist is required to report it for your and other's safetyWww@Answer-Health@Com
