Taking prescription sleeping pills, such as zolpidem (Ambien), eszopiclone (Lunesta), zaleplon (Sonata) or ramelteon (Rozerem), until there's less stress in your life may help you get to sleep until you notice benefits from behavioral treatments!. Ramelteon is the newest sleep medication, and it doesn't appear to have the same risk of dependency and rebound insomnia that the other sleep medications do!. However, all of these medications may cause severe allergic reaction, facial swelling and complex sleep-related behaviors such as sleep-driving and preparing and eating food while asleep!.

Doctors generally don't recommend relying on prescription sleeping pills for more than a few days because they may cause side effects, and developing your ability to sleep without the help of medication is the goal!. In addition, sleeping pills can, rarely, be habit-forming and become less effective after a while!.

The antidepressant trazodone (Desyrel) also may help with insomnia!. Over-the-counter sleep aids contain antihistamines that can induce drowsiness!. They're OK for occasional sleepless nights, but they, too, often lose their effectiveness the more you take them!. Many sleeping pills contain diphenhydramine, which can cause difficulty urinating and a drowsy feeling in the daytime!.

***If insomnia has been interfering with your daytime functioning for a month or longer, see your doctor to determine what might be the cause of your sleep problem and how it might be treated!. ***Www@Answer-Health@Com

Here's a nice method: cherries, dried or otherwise!.

Eat a few cherries right before you go to sleep!. You might have to experiment a bit with the amount of cherries, but about a handful should be enough!. Cherries contain melatonin, a chemical insomnia sufferers tend to lack!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

I can not stress how dangerous it CAN be to take sleep medications!. My beautiful sister committed suicide about 3 months ago!. She began her endless search for sleep a few years ago by innocently taking Benadryl!. She began to take more and more!. I am talking 10 at a time ! I was devastated to find this out!. She checked herself into the Betty Ford Center in California after she had an episode of sleep driving with Ambien!. She came out of rehab, continued to take Ambien, upped her dose of that, went to different doctors, ordered them off the internet, etc!. Yes, she became addicted to sleeping pills!. The more she took, the more she needed!. And the horrible fact of all of this is the doctors she went to, continued to prescribe her different meds along with the Ambien!. She had started going to AA meetings and told me she had found some good, understanding friends there!. She was advised to attend NA meetings but found she liked the people at the AA better for meeting her needs!. Mainly my message to you would be to just be extremely careful about taking any kind of meds to fall asleep!. It is a dangerous trap to fall into!. You can see my sister had addiction issues already and the pills allowed her to take her life!.
One thing I have read alot about is the natural substance Melatonin that we make in our brain!. Supposedly when we try to fall asleep, if there is any light in the room ( even a tv on or a night light ! ), that can literally stop the melatonin from being produced!. The melantonin is what helps us fall asleep!. It is light activated!.

I know this is too long of a post and I apologize up front for that!. But if I can do anything to help anyone to not even get started on taking sleep meds, I feel like I have to tell my story!. And if you are wondering, I did not know how much of the drugs she was taking!. She hid it from all her family!. I was able to read her journal /book from her AA meetings and that is how I came to know how addicted she really was!. She also would drink a beer, some wine or fix herself a margarita ( sp!. !? ) to enhance the pills she took!.

My sister is gone but she would want me to tell you to stop in your tracks!. There are better ways to get to sleep besides pills!.

God Bless to all of you!.Www@Answer-Health@Com
