How difficult would it be for an adult to be diagnosed with a mental disability?!

Question: How difficult would it be for an adult to be diagnosed with a mental disability!?
My parents have always written my brother off as being lazy and immature, because he's always had trouble with school, work, and social situations!. When he was in school they were advised to take him to a doctor to have him examined for any learning disablities, but they never did just because they thought he wasn't trying hard enough!. They were always very hard on him because of this!.
I know him much better than my parents do, and I know he always tried his best in school and still struggled to keep up with his grade level!. He actually failed two grades, but did manage to graduate!.

He's 25 now and has trouble with keeping a job and paying rent!. He's been from several jobs because he either he has trouble interacting with others, or he 'forgets' to show up!.

I can see how someone who doesn't know him that well might see him as antisocial or unmotivated, but he and I are quite close and I know that isn't the case!. For a long time now, I've thought he had some sort of learning disability, but my parents just never saw any reason to have it checked!.

The main reason I'm concerned about this is because I don't think he can live by himself always!. He's barely getting by now, and my parents would never consider letting him move back home!. I'm a 19 year old college student living half way across the country from him, and making just enough money to pay for my own expenses!.

My brother and I have talked about this before, and he's told me that he feels isolated from the rest of the world!. He's considered going to a doctor or psychiatrist before, but usually changes his mind because of his perpetual fear of all doctors, and lack of money to pay for it!.

I can't make him do anything that he doesn't want to, but I think a diagnoses would be very helpful!. There may be some medication that can help him, or perhaps he could recirve some form of financial aide!.!.!.or at the least maybe it would help my parents to be more accepting of him!.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated, thanks!.!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

You sound like a very caring sibling to me!.!.!.if your brother can get over his fear of doctors, most cities have some kind of community mental health system!. In these places, a person can usually get seen on a sliding-scale basis, and have medication and therapy if that is what is determined is needed!. Based on everything you mentioned about his social interactions and feeling isolated, etc!. it seems to me he definitely could benefit from a professional assessment!. I would have him hit up the yellow pages in his city for any "info lines" or "help lines" (in my city you just dial 211) and that connects you with all kinds of resources to assist in finding the right facility!. Best of luck with all of this!. Your continued emotional support will be the best thing for him too, of course!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

Make an appt for your brother at the local mental health clinc, they charge on a fee scale which means it depends on his earnings!. These folks are very good at getting people diagnosed and treat as well as helping them with community available resources!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

It is awesome that you have gone to the trouble to ask this question for your brother!.

If he says he feels isolated from the rest of the world, maybe there are some deeper seated issues or negative associations in his head that keep him viewing himself in the world this way - would almost sound like social anxiety!. And if he has trouble staying on task and completing things, maybe he has tendencies toward ADD!.

Whatever he may or may not be going thru inside, the true reasons beind such outward manifestations of disorders like ADD, social anxiety, generalized anxiety, OCD, Depression, BiPolar, are in my belief 95% phsycological in nature, meaning that he has it in him to overcome these things if he can learn to change his viewpoints and the way he reacts to things!. I'm not saying it would necessarily be easy for him to overcome long held phschological habits, but it is definitely do-able!. Sometimes a head start or extra support in getting there or staying there is a lot less of a struggle with the right meds!.

A concerned psychologist could be really helpful to him in starting to get to the bottom of what he is going thru in the way or outward manifestations, and leading him to get down to addressing the feelings and in turn reasons for his struggles!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

you can be diagnosed at any age for any medical condition!. i was diagnosed with depression when i was 42 and im 49 now!. sounds like your parents really dropped the ball on this one!. how can a parent turn there back on there child who is struggling!. have you tried talking to them on your brothers behalf!? if he has a fear of doctors, can you come home on spring break and go with him!? at least for his first visit!. he doesnt need a doctor he needs a mental health specialist!. tell him a counselor is different than a doctor!. he wont get poked with needles or have crazy looking machines hooked up to him, the counselor will only ask him questions!. they wont laugh at him or call him names or make him feel stupid!. tell your brother that finding the right counselor will give him a sense of peace he's never experienced before!. no one ever died from getting counseling!. good luckWww@Answer-Health@Com

You are a great brother! More should have one like you!.

Since your brother doesn't have much income, the place for him to go is county mental health services for an assessment and help!. It will be free or very low cost!. Depending on how that goes and on what his income is, he may qualify for state or federal financial aid!. If you go home for vacations, it might be good timing for an appt so that you can go with him!. The first time to any type of mental health appt is the most difficult!. If that's the plan and you won't be back there long, your brother may need to set it up in advance!. Sometimes it can take some weeks to get in to see someone!.
