Psychiatric hospitals?!

Question: Psychiatric hospitals!?
Hi!.!.!.If you are going to be sectioned into a psychiatric hospital and offer to go in voluntarily can you leave whenever you want!?

What about if you arent being sectioned and you ask to go in!?
Can they stop you from discharging yourself!?

If you have moderate/severe deprssion and you self harm but are not a danger to yourself or others can your GP/Psychiatrist have you sectioned!?

Does it change if your under 18!?Www@Answer-Health@Com

Answers:
People under 18 years of age do have a right to refuse treatment in the UK against their parents wishes! A medic would judge if they are capable of making their own decisions (Gillick competent) and if the medic felt that they had a reasoned arguement for not having treatment and understood the consequences then their descision, then the patient would be allowed to over ride their parents wishes!. Each case is judged on it's own merit!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

This all depends on the state you live in and laws governing such!. Normally however when you admit yourself to a psychiatric hospital they will keep you on a 72 hour hold!. They can keep you longer if you pose a threat to yourself or others!. I have seen people go in and not be released for some time because the therapist/doctors didn't think them fit to be released!. Under 'normal' circumstances however you will not be kept for an extended period!.
I am a cutter myself so I do know what you meant when you tped if you self harm but are not a danger to yourself or others!.!.!.correct me if Im wrong but you did mean you have harmed yourself in the past (near or far) but are not currently wanting to hurt yourself!? If you are not in danger or thinking of suicide or harming yourself then you should be fine!.
As to being under 18 again this goes by where you live as some places view 16 as being an adult but generally 18 is adult and if you are under that age then it is your parents/guardians who have the say not the minor!.
Also for people who are into self harm and or suicidal DBT can help immensily! I will link the site have a look at it please!

I hope everything works out for you, take care!

any doctor has a legal obligation to notify the right people if they think you are a danger to yourself or others

if you are under 18 you have no say in anything

if you go in voluntarily you can leave voluntarily
if you are court/legally/doctor mandated to go into a psych hospital you must stayWww@Answer-Health@Com

1st question: it depends on what your voluntarilly going in for!. Usually, you may not come and go until they say you are deemed ready and then are an outpatient if safe enough!.
They can always stop you!. ALWAYS!.
If you self harm, that is a danger to yourself, your GP OR psy needs to know so you can get additional therapy!. When you are under 18 you have no say in anything, its all up to your parents what happens!.!.!.its their coverage and insurance that they need etc!.!.!.!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

*Your under 18,you have no rights!. After 18!.!.you are in control of you!.
*Usually if you put yourself in you can get out when you want BUT at your age they may keep you cause your not 18!.
^If they are asking you to go in, they are commiting you and making it look like you agreed!.
*Self harm!.!.yes your GP/Psych can have you sectioned with a gaurdians approvalWww@Answer-Health@Com

About 3 years ago I had a breakdown!.
I was then dx with bipolar!.
I admittedmyself into the hospital and no you cannot leave when you feel like it!.
IN all I was inthe hospital 5 times!.
I was court ordered to go atone time and you stay until the doc givesthe okay!.
I have not been in the hospital in 2 years and I hopeto never go back!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

NO, YOU HAVE TO STAY THERE AT LEAST 3 DAYS!.
EVEN IF IT'S VOLUNTARY!.
YES A PSYCHIATRIST CAN HAVE YOU PUT INTO A HOSPITAL IF HE THINKS YOU ARE A DANGER TO YOURSELF OR OTHERS!.
YOU SAID YOU ARE SELF HARMING BUT YOU ARE NOT A DANGER TO YOURSELF!. THE 2 DON'T ADD UP!. PLEASE ADMIT YOU ARE A DANGER TO YOURSELF THEN GO INTO THE HOSPITAL, IT WILL BE OK!. THE FIRST STEP TO GETTING HELP IS ADMITTING THERE IS A PROBLEM!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

Sweetheart,

If you self-harm, you *are* deemed to be a danger to yourself!.

If you've been told that you're going to be sectioned, have they told you under what Section!? Unless you've been found acting dangerously or oddly in a public place (Section 136) then it's usually a Section 2 (initial period of 28 days for "observation and assessment")!.

If you are a minor, then the sectioning will be done with the agreement of your parent(s) or guardian(s)!.

If the decision to section has already been taken, then you are deemed either 'at risk of harm' or 'at risk of being a danger to others'!. If you're depressed it's obviously the former, as people with CD don't tend to pose a threat to anyone but themselves!. Once you've been sectioned, then you are deemed to be there involuntarily and the doctors are the only ones who can decide when you are well enough to leave (unlike physical illness, with MI you aren't able to override the doctor(s) orders and discharge yourself)!.

If you request admission, then you would only (usually - unless there were very explicit circumstances that warranted it) be admitted on the say-so of a doctor!. You can't just ask to go in for no reason!. You will usually be assessed by a psychiatrist and they would have to 'sign you in' if they do not deem admission to be necessary, then they would refuse to admit you!.

TTBOMK (and I'd have to check this) a GP has no Power of Section; if a GP thought you were in need of sectioning they would have to refer you to the duty psychatrist and (s)he would have the final say on whether you need to be admitted!.

It's a bit like a GP diagnosing you with cancer and then sending you straight to surgery without referral to an oncologist!. Sorry, that's a bit of a rubbish analogy, but it's nearly 4am here and I can't sleep - again!

If you have gone in voluntarily, unless something happens that makes them section you whilst you're there (which *IS* possible) then you can leave whenever you want!.

I've been trying to find a version of the MHA for loonies, but I can't - all I can find are either links to the real thing, or MH organisations takes on it!. Sorry!.!.!. :o(Www@Answer-Health@Com
