Why don't some people outgrow their fear of the dark?!

Question: Why don't some people outgrow their fear of the dark!?
I'm pretty sure as a kid almost everyone was afraid of the dark!. But usually as you get older most people outgrow it!. Why doesn't everyone!? Is there anything specific that could cause an extreme fear of the dark!?

I'm 15 and probably more afraid of the dark now than I ever was as a kid!. I'm okay sitting with people when lights are off but it still creeps me out!. It takes me hours to sleep if everyone else is asleep and I sleep with my light/s on!. Is there any way to overcome this fear without facing it!? Is anyone else extremely afraid of the dark!? :PWww@Answer-Health@Com

Answers:
Fear of the dark is a primal fear, probably due to the fact we don't see well at night!. That made our ancestors sitting ducks for things that had people on the dinner list- and the prudent, fearful Neaderthal stuck close to the cave as a result!. Fear of the dark equated to survival!. Now days, we have other things to go bump and scare us!. Children usually develop the fear when they become more aware of the outside world, and there are a lot of things out there they just aren't familiar with enough to not be afraid!. Fear is a survival tool, after all- it's the fear of falling that keeps most people off th edge of the cliff- so it's not necessarily a bad thing!. At your age, fear could also be linked to a certain amount of worry about growing up!. Lets face it, the grown up world is a scarey place, and you are smart enough to realize it!. It probably hasn't been helped any by the various movies and books that feed on our natural fears!. Watch a ghostie show, and most folks are a bit wider awake at night!. The only real way to conquer a fear is to confront it, with knowledge and a bit of daring!. Nobody said you have to go crawl into a dark cave 5 miles underground, but a nightlight might be in order!. As well as a small flashlight under the pillow!. That way, you have light on command!. Withing the confines of your room, you already know what's in there, and should be able to gradually cut down on the light at night!. Its about as safe a place as any to begin whittling down on the fear factor!. Recogninze a certain amount is sensible, and then work on getting rid on what isn't!. That means you don't go cave exploring- but you should be able to go to sleep in your own room!. A bit of music in the headphones might be in order as well, and learning a relax routine before bed to set the stage to sleep quickly!. That mght be a warm bath, comfy jammies, a nice book, and lower lighting conditions until you feel sleepy!. Meantime, don't stress too much over it!. A little fear is actually a good thing- if it keeps you out of the saber tooth tiger's mouth!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

yes, honestly, i am extremely afraid of the dark too and i don't know why!. so i know how you feel!. even now as i type i am wondering if something will happen while i am not looking in the dark!. :(

the fear of darkness is called "Achluophobia"!.

you asked if there is anything specific that causes it, well, i'm not sure but it may be that you have either had a bad experience when you were in the dark when you were younger or just like me, is afraid to know what will happen in the dark!. darkness is normally associated with evil, so that may be one of the reasons!. it is said that to get rid of a fear is to face it!. but honestly im too afraid to face it!. but you can try!. just trying sitting ina drak room with someone and then maybe you will feel ok and realize that nothing bad will happen!.
hope i could help!.Www@Answer-Health@Com
