Diagnosed as bipolar: can I ask this of my psychiatrist?!

Question: Diagnosed as bipolar: can I ask this of my psychiatrist!?
I was diagnosed with Bipolar disorder last week!. My psychiatrist she suggested I go on lithium as well as a sleeping tablet!.

I really do not want to get fat on meds!. I'm 5'9, 150lbs and when I was on seroquel I was hungry ALL the time!. I want to keep seeing a psychiatrist because otherwise I feel vulnerable and alone!. But I don't want meds!. Can I keep seeing a psychiatrist!? Or do I have to go to a counsellor!? I dislike counsellers, but the doctor I'm seeing is awesome!. Are there any bipolar medications that don't mess with your appetite or metabolism!?

Thanks in advance!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

Hi

Lamictal is a very good med!. I would keep the psychiatrist because it is really hard to get one in a pinch if you have a crisis!. Counselors can be a challenenge -but if you find the right one it can be very helpful!.

Watch your caffeine intake and if you get the urge for sugary things -substitue and keep lots of fruit on hand!. Maybe talk to your doctor about trying natural supplements such as fish oil capsules and B vitamins and possibly St!. John's Wort!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

Lithium shouldn't mess with your appetite!. Neither should a sleeping tablet!. I Seroquel doesn't make you hungry, it makes you thirsty and your body mistakes it for hunger!.

While on these meds and you feel hungry try drinking a glass of water before you eat anything!. If that satisfies your craving you will know that your weren't hungry only thirsty !.

I know that being on medication's is hard, but it is a lot more difficult to overcome the disorder without it!.

Good luck coping with your disorder, I know that it can be very difficult!.

My step daughter has the dis-order!. She is only 14!. She takes Lithium, Risperdrel and Ativan!. She also go to boarding school for the strict structure she requires!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

This is a tough dilemma because everyone's body is different, you know!?

I am bipolar!. I take effexor and lamictal!. I have never gained weight!. But I also exercise almost every day!.

Ask your doctor why he's chosen lithium to treat your symptoms!. Maybe an alternative would be beneficial without the side effects associated with lithium!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

Yeaaah, Lamictal works really well, It's a semi-new drug, but it's really good!.

Very little side effects (no weight gain really from what I hear) and it works with a lot of patients, it works really well too!. Ask your psychiatrist!.Www@Answer-Health@Com
