Psychiatrist- do they only deal in meds?!

Question: Psychiatrist- do they only deal in meds!?
I'm 19 and was diagnosed with Bipolar I disorder last week!. I've been seeing a psychiatrist and she's awesome!. She wants me to go on meds, but I really don't want to because I'm worried I'll get fat!.

If I don't want to go on meds, will they send me to a counsellor instead of my psychiatrist!? Can I have a psychiatrist who just monitors my moods and who doesn't put me on medication!?

I've been to counsellors and hated it!. But I really like my psychiatrist!.

Thanks in advance!Www@Answer-Health@Com

First of, being worried of getting fat isn't a good reason to sacrifice your health!. If you want to go on meds, talk to your psychiatrist about which ones have the least side effects, and just eat well and exercise!. Then you won't get fat!.

Second, you can refuse to go on meds!. You don't have to!. A psychiatrist can't stop treating you because you won't want to take meds!.

But think about this rationally!. You don't HAVE to go on meds!. I'm bipolar, and I turned away meds!. But I did it because I wanted to learn to cope!. Meds are a good choice if you really feel like you need them, but not going on them because you're afraid it might add 10 pounds to you is just silly!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

Like all medical personnel, psyches firstly like to try the easy treatment, and just write out a prescription!. They can then charge you for a full session in which they might have spent only 5 minutes!. AND they do not have to spend anytime out of hours thinking about your case!.
I found that when the med that they prescribed did not help me (depression) they just wrote out another script for a higher dosage, without pausing to wonder why it did not work, when even I knew why they were not working!.
I think, sadly, that a psychiatrist's repertoire consists only of meds, and talk therapy comes a poor second!.
But, saying that, since Bipolar is a chemical imbalance rather than only a psychiatric disorder, then I suspect that only meds will help you!. Ask your doc about Metformin, I have not tried this, but it may help to counteract the weight gain!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

there are so many new psych meds that dont cause weight gain!. if the weight gain is the only thing keeping you off meds, try the meds!. if the medicine they first put you on makes you gain weight, they can try other medicines!. if you hate counselling, it will not benefit you at all unless you find a therapist who you can trust!. psychiatrists specialize in the medicine treatments!. if your psychiatrist wants to put you on medicine its because they feel like that is what would be most beneficial to you!. mention to her that you are concerned about the side effects especially gaining weight and she can choose one that doesnt cause it!. bipolar disorder is a chemical inbalance, so sometimes just the right medicine is all it takes to help the mood swings!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

yah, i believe psychiatrists usually just deal in meds, i think few of psychs are listening to sumones prob & i believe counsellors are the one who can really help you!. you can see yer psychiatrist for meds and therapy for counsellor!. thats what usually people do!.!. but its up to you anyway, if yer psychiatrist only prscribe meds then you should look for a psychologist/consellor=)Www@Answer-Health@Com

well first is sounds like you are in a little denial stage because you are too concerned about something that you can no longer control just let go and things will go as needed quit worrying about all the bs!. take time to sit back and take in the fact that you are beginning to make yourself happyWww@Answer-Health@Com

Usually psychiatrists just distribute medications and talk a little with you!. They leave the rest of your treatment up in therapy sessions!. But since your case is different and you want to continue with this psychiatrist, maybe you should talk with him/her about it to see what they say!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

they might have to adjust meds if there's any negative side effects!.negatives are EXTREME weight gain, hair loss(yeah my friend has bipolar and took meds that made her hair fall out) or psychosis but some will disappear in timeWww@Answer-Health@Com
