Question: What are the differences between a psychologist, a psychiatrist, and a psychotherapist!?
Answers:
I am a Certified Medical Assistant

The all have studied Psychology!.!.
The Psychologist has studied more and has more degrees!.
Psychologist can prescribe medications Psychiatrist and Psychotherapist's CAN NOT and they are basically the same as position wise goesWww@Answer-Health@Com

Other than the money charged and insurance willingness to cover their care!? Psychologist generally is licensed in the state to practice psychological therapy and generally holds a PhD degree!. Psychotherapist is used interchangeably with Psychologist but it is not a regulated term that requires license!. So a Psychotherapist may hold a PhD with a license, they may also be a Social Worker with a MSW (Master of Social Work), MA / MS Degree in another field, or hold other qualifications!. A psychiatrist on the other hand is a doctor that holds a M!.D!. (Doctorate of Medicine) degree and is qualified in the state to practice medicine and has most likely completed training as a psychiatrist!.

Just because someone holds themself out to be a psychologist, psychiatrist, or psychotherapist does not mean they are qualified to treat any problem!. Marriage Therapy & Family Therapy for example usually requires additional training beyond the basic degree!. Marriage and Family therapist are usually certified with an additional credential in Marriage and Family Therapy!.

As a consumer of mental health you need to understand their qualifications, training, and if they are qualified to treat the problem you are seeking treatment for being agreeing to see them!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

Psychiatrists are physicians who have earned an MBBS/M!.D!. or a D!.O!. professional degree, whereas psychologists have earned a doctoral degree Ph!.D!., Psy!.D!., or Ed!.D!. Psychiatrists generally spend shorter periods of contact time with clients/patients, and the principal method of treatment is psychopharmacology (meaning the administration of drugs)!.

And I'm pretty sure psychotherapists are trained therapists specializing in disorders of the mind!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

A psychiatrist is a doctor specializing in psychiatry!. A psychologist has either a MA or PhD, and cannot prescribe medication!. A psychotherapist is a psychologist!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

Not sure about psychotherapist!.!. but the difference between a psychologist and a psychiatrist is the psychiatrist can perscribe medicine!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

Psychiatrists specialize in medicine!.Www@Answer-Health@Com
