How do mood stabilizers work?!

Question: How do mood stabilizers work!?
First off, i'm still not even sure if I have bi-polar but i've been in a real bad way lately and I fear if I go to the doctor i'll be put on some drug that i'll either forget to take one day, which will throw me completely out of wack (i'm controlling myself ok now but I keep having these thoughts, i'm depressed, irritable, I have high energy and feel like I need to excercise for 2 or 3 hours a day then feel like a zombie for the rest of the day, my ocd seems to be getting worse) or that I might get so addicted to the high that i'll start consuming it like alcohol!. Can anyone tell me a little bit about mood stabilizers!. Can they also make the situation worse!? How are they controlled!? Any info would be good!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

I've never known anyone to be addicted to a mood stabilizer!. They just don't work that way!. All they do, is help stabilize the chemicals in your brain so that your moods won't swing so high or so low!.

Look at it like this, bipolar is like a roller coaster full of really high hills and low valleys in the track!. A mood stabilizer helps by making the hills and valleys not so deep!. Kind of flattens out the road so to say, so you can function more normally more of the time!.

Can they make it worse!? Sometimes!. It's basically trial and error to find the right pill for you at the right dosage!. Same as the right pill can help immensely, the wrong pill can make it worse!. Also if the dosage is too much or not enough, that can affect you as well!.

I'm not sure what you mean by 'how are they controlled'!. You do have to remember to take them as prescribed!. They aren't something you want to mess around with!. But to simply miss one here or there, isn't quite that bad!. If you're alittle late, you take it as soon as you realize, if it's almost time for your next dose, you simply skip the missed dose and go on!.Www@Answer-Health@Com
