Can Borderline Personality Disorder be present without suicide threats/attempts !

Question: Can Borderline Personality Disorder be present without suicide threats/attempts or risky behavior!?
My husband definitely has some of the emotional lability of BPD without any sort of desire for risky behavior or any thoughts of suicide!. I'm also sad to admit that I've had similar characteristics in the past, but seem to have overcome the majority of them!. My husband's emotions are more extreme than called for in a LOT of situations and he has a tendency to think irrationally at times!. It's so strange to me because one tiny little thing can set him off for days, but he's generally very polite and friendly to me and everyone else!. He can realize and apologize for his irrational thinking later and can say how he should've done better, but he seems to keep being irrational all the same!. He does occasionally attempt to modulate the way he's being irrational, but he's still in the same space in his head!. He's capable of saying some pretty rude things to anyone in his way when he's feeling extra emotional!. When he's not feeling this way, he's very fun to be around!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

Answers:
Absolutely!. It's very difficult to diagnose accurately, though, even as a skilled psychologist, so don't jump to conclusions either way!.

My ex-wife was eventually diagnosed with BPD!. This was a miracle in my life, as it explained everything that had made me crazy about our marriage for decades!. But I would not have recognized the disorder as a possibility early on - it took several years before the suicide threats, and her impulsive behavior, not counting the crazy driving, was mostly not life-threatening!. It was (and still is) impulsive spending, or impulsive sexual behavior I didn't find out about for years for the latter!. So when I look back at the diagnostic criteria, she easily meets 5 of the 9 with what I know now!. With what I knew after a year of marriage, I'd never have guessed!.

I got a much better feel for what a borderline is like from joining two of the Yahoo! online support groups for non-borderlines who are married to borderlines, or are children, parents, siblings, friends, or lovers of borderlines!. There are patterns that run through everyone's experiences that make you realize, "Yes! I am part of the club no one ever wants to be a member of!" pretty quickly!. I highly recommend the LandOfOz and bpd411intro groups!. Randi Krieger's "Stop Walking on Eggshells", available at any online bookstore, is also somewhat helpful in figuring out if you're around a borderline!.

In the end, diagnosis isn't as important as dealing with the problems sometimes!. I know a woman who was diagnosed as a borderline by someone, got very upset about it, and got into dialectical behavioral therapy, Linehan's treatment that's supposed to help BPD sufferers!. She's still working the DBT and is much happier, but her therapists say she is in no way a borderline - yet DBT helped her with borderline-like traits!.

Or, my wife may have been misdiagnosed and I could be wrong - but I solved the problem by divorcing her and getting away from emotional abuse!. If you're being mistreated, it doesn't really matter what you label a person!. It just matters to not accept poor treatment!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

Yes it can,
but doesn't sound like he has BPD though, sounds more like a mood disorder, would be a good idea keeping a diary of his moods and get it evaluatedWww@Answer-Health@Com

He doesn't have to meet "all" the criteria of "all" the symptoms of BDP (Borderline)!. The requirements is he has to meet only five or more!. I have had BPD for over 25 years and I still haven't had the risky behavior either nor do I have intense interpersonal relationships!. Although in 2006 I did try to commit suicide 3 times!. (unlike your husband) I have met that suicidal ideation criteria!.

My point is!.!.!.Yes, he can be Borderline, but he doesn't have to have the suicidal tendencies or the risky behavior to be Borderline!.

I you believe he has this disorder, I would seek help asap! It is a hard disorder to live with, even harder on the one that love the Borderline!.

Best wishes!.!.!.take care!
