Its a stigma people have, just like epilepsy and schizophrenia, people are not taught when young so don't understand!. Because they don't understand you get very little sympathy or help, except from hospital!. I have epilepsy, my wife has schizophrenia, we don't have many friends as so many people including our relatives are afraid!. It does not astound me but at least we have each other to care for and understand!. Terrible life, is it not!?Www@Answer-Health@Com

Hi

No, it doesn't astound me!. I've suffered from clinical depression for over 20 years and now work as a mental health support worker!. Unfortunately stigma and discrimination is still rife, especially in the workplace!

In my opinion most of it is down to fear and misunderstanding about mental illness!.

The funny thing, that most people don't realise, is that at some point in their lives 1 in 4 people will suffer from some form of mental illness!.

Depression can be and is a debilitating illness that effects people on a daily basis and the way they are able to live and function!. To anyone who thinks it is as easy as 'pulling yourself together' I challenge them to walk for just a day in my shoes, or anyone else who is genuinely suffering from this illness!.

As with any illness or disability there are varying degrees of how badly you are affected!. Because mental illness is an unseen disability people who don't suffer often fail to understand what it is like or how bad it can be!.

To them I say, just be thankful that you don't know, but educate yourself and try and have more understanding!.

The Mind website has some great information about all kinds of mental illness and it is written in easy to read and understand terms!.

Understanding depression:

is just one of the booklets available!.

If anyone wants to learn more then please use the Mind website!.

Hope my opinion is useful and makes people stop and think!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

You do get some people who never suffer depression, think it's all just a state of mind and can't empathise at all with suffers and I envy these people!. In truth though, I believe that they are actually very few and very far between!. Everyone has suffered some level of depression and I believe that everyone fully understands it, but I also feel that many people struggle to admit it!. When they tell us to pull ourselves together, I believe that they are saying two things:
1!. Don't complain about it, I have to suffer as well and try to keep it to myself, so should you!.
2!. By complaining about your depression, you are reminding me about my own and I'm unprepared to cope with this!.

We know a great deal about mental illness, but by acknowledging it in others, we may be forced to acknowledge it in ourselves!. What we really need is greater patience, understanding and empathy between each other!.

As someone better than me once said, all you need is love!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

That old chestnut 'just pull yourself together' is about the most unhelpful thing someone without depression can say to someone who has it!. If only it was that easy!! I mean what on earth do they take you for!?

It doesn't surprise me that not many people know much about mental illness in general (due to the attached stigma of course)!. It's sad that it will probably always be that way!.

It's also unfortunate that when you live with a mental illness, you can only judge for yourself which people are good for you to be around, and which people are best avoided!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

Well because people don't understand its a medical condition that needs either therapeutic treatment through therapy sessions and/or medications!. I have battled it for a couple years off and on, and I had one friend say that to me and it hurt me!. I was in a great time in my life yet I felt horrible!. I remember crying on the phone to my father at one point saying, I get to go to Italy to study which is the one thing I've been looking forward to in a long time, yet I'm not happy!.!.!. why am I not happy!? My father was one of the only people who understood (being a minister and having a good deal of knowledge about it)!.

Also the fact that the term "depressed" is thrown around by everyone so much that depression in general is taken so lightly!. Everyone has been mildly depressed at one time or another and most people bounce back out of it!. But for some, its a major depression that takes more, and for the most people who bounce out of it they don't understand!. It sucks but its true!.!.!. the stigma of the mentally ill!.!.!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

Because we have seen so many 'sufferers' on the dole, the other excuse that can't be proved is 'back ache'!

Have a go at those losers who fake it then you will once again be taken seriously instead of being regarded as a slacker!.

Also, some people are just a bit fed up and call it depressed, they do need to pull themselves together!.

It doesn't astound me because of hte above reasons!. Obviosuly there are genuine cases, are you all so touchy because it's hit a nerve!?Www@Answer-Health@Com

It certainly ios apitty that in this day and age, people are still so ignorrant to menatl illness!. when my doctor diagnosed me as suffering from depression, my mothers words were, what have you got to be depressed about!?!?!?!?!? people need to understand that this is not something people use as an excuse for when things arent going their way, but a genuin illness that sufferers cannot make go away!!!much more needs to be done to raise awarenessWww@Answer-Health@Com

It does not surprise me at all!. I have suffered from depression for the past 9 years and im now 24, have had therapy for a few years also , alot of my problem relate to my abusive upbringing but im alot better then i was!. People just dont understand the illness until i think they go through it themselves they wont!. You cant just click your fingers and feel better, im sure we all wished you could, its an illness!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

I agree!. However, there is a difference between being depressed and 'down in the dumps'!.

I have off days where I feel really down, but I know I'm not depressed because, as you say, depression is a mental illness!. But some people use the term very lightly!. Those people I could say just that to!.
But to a genuine person with depression I would never dream of saying such a thing!. Because it can't be done!. It is a chemical imbalance, not a frame of mind!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

It could be people have their own issues and aren't able to face "negativity!." I think it's the people who are most comfortable in their own skin, most confident, who are able to accept the facts of depression!. 'Could be that it's the people who are depressed themselves who avoid the subject!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

This is such a "me me me" society, that it doesn't surprise me one bit that there isn't much sympathy for depression!. If you told someone you suffered from depression, nine times out of ten the other person is thinking, "How can this person be depressed!? He doesn't know HALF of what I've gone through, and I'm not depressed so he shouldn't be either!."Www@Answer-Health@Com

No not at all,I suffer from depression and my husband sees what i go threw,Hes very good with me,But at the same time he doesn't understand,no matter how much i try and explain it,The thing that i think gets me the most is when he says i no,What you don't no the half of it,The i no does my head in!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

it doesn't so much surprise me as annoy me!. i hate the stigma and ignorance related to mental illness, it makes our recovery so much harder!. and i've had a lot of the 'pull yourself together' remarks - it only makes things worse!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

I suppose some people that have not been though it will not understand!. Ignorance!.

Like with most other conditions unless we have been though them we don't REALLY understand!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

No i have studied mental health and understand the stigma!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

I think pirate has missed the point here!Www@Answer-Health@Com
