I went for a medical last year as part of a job interview!. The doctor told me that nicotine is good for the brain!! Apparently it helps the memory!. He also told me not to tell anyone! He said I should give it up anyway, but then had to agree when I told him that the death rate's 100% anyway !.!.!.!. for everyone!. None of us get out of here alive y'know!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

I'm no medical expert but having been a heavy smoker for 50+ years can confirm nicotine does give a 'lift' to the brain - at times of stress - or need to concentrate!.
And is an addictive drug!.
Unfortunately it also does a lot of harm to the body (lung cancer, etc!.) but in a random sort of way, not affecting all of us the same way!. Statistically - as Life Insurance Companies currently rate - you pay an extra 25% premium , as a smoker!.
But of course it's all a bit hit & miss -juggling with long-term statistics!. I know of many who've packed in smoking - only to die of other forms of cancer or heart disease - at a young age!. And some who've smoked twice as long -and survived!.
So medical opinions will continue to vary - it might well prove to be the case that nicotine is helpful keeping the brain alert - staving off alzheimers - albeit at increased risk to bodily welfare!.
Like you - I get more than confused at all the varying views, theories and opinions - but simply do what comes naturally!. As a nicotine addict I continue to be a heavy smoker - keeping my brain alert - and if I fancy a large lump of butter on my mashed potatoes (rather than unpolysaturated wotsits) I'll jolly enjoy it!.
As wise answerer above commented - the only 100% certainty is that we'll all exit stage left one way or the other, sooner or later!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

Let's compare you [a reasonably healthy and fuctioning person] to a person with dementia and alzheimers!.

In you, the negative effects of nicotine outweigh the positive effects!. But in someone with dementia, the good that the nicotine does, outweighs the negative effects!. These people are already ill, and the effect of the nicotine is small compared to the relief they can gain from their existing problems!.

On the other hand, I wouldn't always believe the latest scientific research!. They tend to change their minds a few times before they get it right!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

the nicotine is the product that is now supposedly beneficial NOT smoking!. Inhaling toxic smoke into your lungs is never beneficial and if the benefits of nicotine is avoiding alheimezers than GREAT you'll remember every thing the dr!. said when he tells you you have cancer!. Hope it works out for you!.!.!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

It's best to listen to your body!. If you treat it right it will let you know, if you treat it wrong it will let you know!. Ignore most of these 'XX will improve your health/memory/longevity etc!.'Www@Answer-Health@Com
