The long answer is: Attention Deficeit Disorder is not the same as mental retardation!. Someone who is considered "mentally retarded" has an IQ below 70!.
Many, many people who have ADD and ADHD have high IQs!. Its even thought that in some cases, being gifted causes a person's ADD!.
Albert Einstein had ADD!. He couldn't talk until he was four, and couldn't read until he was seven!. I suppose all those ideas swimming around in his head about how the world works could have distracted him from the lessons at hand (reading, speaking, etc!.)
Not everyone with ADD is hyperatctive, or behaves in unpredictable, "disagreeable" ways, either!. Many people who have ADD are quiet daydreamers, making learning very, very hard!.
ADD does not neccessarily take away one's ability to focus!. Many with ADD "hyperfocus!." They just get locked in on the wrong thing at the wrong time and keep trying to re-connect with what is presented to them as important!.

Of course not!. "Retarded" is now more of a general term!. They have more specific diagnosis and names for disorders rather than a general "retarded"!. There is "mental retardation", but most people use the term retarded because they don't know any better and can't use the real term (I am very bothered by this)!.

u can have add or adhd and be gifted!.it has to do with ur impulse control,or lack thereof,not ur i!.q!. i am a nurse also,and i agree with the r!.n who answered that its over-diagnosed!.it sure is!when i was a child-not that long ago,kids had recess and gymn every day and were not expected to be sedentary!.now,it seems every one wants obediant little robots who sit still all day at school,then sit in front of their computers all night at home!.its too much to expect children to be still 24/7!.childhood should encompass recreation and outdoor play!.people complain kids are obese-but they got that way(Not just from diet)but by being expected to be more compliant and sedentary than most children,especially boys,are capable of!.when my class got rowdy at school,the teacher decided to take us outside for a break,we'd run and play then return inside,ready to learn again!.teachers cant or dont do that anymore,now kids are expected to sit all day and when they cant,they are slapped with a label and given meds!.me and most of my friends would have been given ritalin if we werekids today-we were WILD-but we all grew up just fine,with stable jobs and good lives,happilly married,etc-without being labeled forever or given meds!.Www@Answer-Health@Com
