Antidepressant addictions and reactions?!

Question: Antidepressant addictions and reactions!?
I spoke with my mom's doctor about antidepressants a while back and something he said has floated out of my mind!. We were talking about addictions and how it occurs extremely fast, and he named 2 major antidepressants that were highly addictive!. I cannot remember which 2 they were, nor can I remember how addictive they are on a pathophysiological level!.

Can anyone define how these medications become so highly addictive!? I understand how they work in the brain (reuptake and so on) I just can't remember why they are so extremely addictive after taking them for such a short period of time!. I also can't remember what happens in the brain that makes it so addictive!.

Thanks to all who reply!Www@Answer-Health@Com

Although there aren't anti-depressants that are considered addictive, research is showing that especially SSRI's can be extremely difficult to get off of, even if you do it very slowly!. Although it's not having withdrawal, your brain gets used to that extra serotonin, and it's never quite as happy afterwards until it adapts, which can take a long time!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

Most SSRIs (selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors) are not addictive!. You would not want to go off of them all at once because they have a long half-life, but if you gradually go off of them there are no addictive repercussions that i'm aware of!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

You may be thinking of antianxiety meds!.!.!. benzodiazepines are highly addictive!.

I cannot think of any antidepressants that are addictive!. Some have withdrawal side effects!.!.!. so you have to taper from them like effexor!.Www@Answer-Health@Com
